Born in Rio is the final album by Brazilian jazz guitarist and composer Carlos Munhoz. Unlike his previous albums, which featured his interpretations of Brazilian and jazz standards, Born in Rio consists entirely of Carlos’s original compositions. Featuring special guests Joyce and Romero Lubambo, the album represents a deeply personal final chapter in Carlos’s recording career and a celebration of his Brazilian roots.

The Flute & Guitar Ensemble brings together Carlos Munhoz on guitar, Luiz Braga on flute, and Gui Mallon on guitar for an intimate journey through centuries of classical music. With a strong focus on the Baroque era, the album features works by Vivaldi, J.S. Bach, Telemann, and Scarlatti, alongside pieces by Fürstenau, Monti, and the traditional Spanish Romance.
The combination of flute and classical guitar gives the album an elegant, old-world atmosphere, moving from the ornate sounds of the Baroque period into later Classical and Romantic traditions.

Classical Guitar was Carlos Munhoz’s debut album, recorded in 1997 and featuring 20 tracks, more than any other album he would record. Much of the music reaches back to the Renaissance and Baroque eras, featuring works by Bach, Scarlatti, Dowland, Milán, and others.
The worn guitar case pictured on the cover wasn’t a prop. Carlos carried it while playing on street corners and selling his music to make a living, before eventually turning those years of performing into his first recorded album.

My name is Dan Munhoz, and Carlos Munhoz is my father.
Music was my dad’s life. He was a Brazilian jazz guitarist who spent decades playing, recording, and creating music, from his own compositions to interpretations of songs by some of Brazil’s greatest musicians, including Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Sadly, my dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2011 and eventually had to give up what he loved most: playing guitar.

I created this page to preserve and share the music he dedicated so much of his life to creating. My hope is that new listeners can discover Carlos Munhoz and enjoy his music the same way I always have.

This is his music, his story, and a piece of the legacy he left behind.

A música sempre foi a vida do meu pai. Ele foi um guitarrista brasileiro de jazz que dedicou décadas à música, tocando, gravando e compondo, desde suas próprias composições até interpretações de músicas de alguns dos maiores nomes da música brasileira, incluindo Antônio Carlos Jobim.

Infelizmente, meu pai foi diagnosticado com Parkinson em 2011 e, com o avanço da doença, acabou tendo que deixar de fazer o que mais amava: tocar violão.

Criei esta página para preservar e compartilhar a música à qual ele dedicou grande parte de sua vida. Espero que novos ouvintes possam descobrir o trabalho de Carlos Munhoz e apreciar sua música da mesma forma que eu sempre apreciei.
