Chiyo-ni was born in the Ishikawa Prefecture in 1703. She began writing haiku poetry when she was 6, and her ability was soon recognized even though haiku by women were often dismissed and ignored at that time. Chiyo-ni was strongly influenced by Basho’s poetry (probably because her teachers were his students), but developed her own unique style.

This week I’m happy to present a haiku by Bartosz Leszczyński, a musician and regular participant in the Haiku challenge as Oxebe.

“Bartosz is a self-taught music enthusiast from Poland fascinated with synthesizers and creating sounds and timbres. His passion is to form rich, evolving and complex sounds and textures. His musical path began from playing the piano, and piano sound can be often heard in his music. He also uses electric guitar and tries to capture sounds that can be shaped by tweaking guitar effects beyond limits. Through the music he intends to express wistfulness, incertitude and the feel of distant and unbounded space.”

A wild sea- In the distance over Sado The Milky Way. ( Naviarhaiku 333 )

Another fairly literal interpretation but one that seems to work quite well. I had a couple of field recordings of birds and the ocean that seemed like a good fit here. My concept was a transition from earth to space, represented by field recordings then synth pad and plucks. Fairly direct, but overall I'm happy with the end result.

For this week’s challenge I chose a poem by the greatest master of haiku: Matsuo Bashō.

During the journey that would result in his masterpiece, The Narrow Road to the Deep North, Basho stopped at Izumo Point on the Japan Sea and gazed out to Sado Island which, at that time, was infamous as a place of exile.

From May 2018 until June 2020 he continuously travelled.
