It’s not the first time we experiment with haiku and AI, but it’s always fun. ChalkWalk, a member of Naviar’s community and regular contributor to the Haiku challenge, created some haiku with the support of GPT-3, an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. This language prediction model was developed by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research laboratory.

Like Santoka and Seisensui, Kawahigashi Hekigoto (1873-1937) was an important advocate of the free verse haiku.
Besides being a writer and critic of haiku, Hekigoto was a literary scholar, noh dancer, art critic, calligrapher, social commentator, and mountain climber.

Widely regarded as one of the most important female haiku poets, Fukuda Chiyo-ni was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. She started writing haiku early in her childhood and was strongly influenced by Basho’s poetry (probably because her teachers were his students).

The fundamentals in Basho’s poetry include: sabi (detached loneliness), wabi (poverty of spirit), hosomi (slenderness, sparseness), shiori (tenderness), sokkyo (spontaneity), makoto (sincerity), fuga (elegance), karumi (simplicity), kyakkan byosha (objectivity), and shiZen to hitotsu ni naru (oneness with nature). Fukuda Chiyo-ni was particularly interested in the latter, since most of her poetry deals with the realm of nature.

The Haiku Foundation is always a rich source of inspiration. I immediately fell in love with this poem by Choshi, included in R.H. Blyth “Japanese Satirical Verses“. For those of you who are not familiar with the difference between haiku and senryu: the former tends to be about nature, while the latter refers to some aspect of human nature or emotions. Their structure is similar.

I couldn’t find any information on Choshi online, so here’s what R.H. Blyth said about our haiku of the week:

“We have here a clear example of the difference between haiku and senryu. The sight of the sea in the early morning makes someone wake up a fellow traveller. But what remains in our minds is not the sea glittering in the morning sunshine, but the shaking and awakening of the traveller by someone who hardly knows him from Adam. We feel the kinship of the men through that one touch of nature.”

The haiku of the week is by Yoshida Ryusui (1691-1758). Very little is known about him, except he’s often cited and quoted as a poet who exemplified the key element in haiku of kireji or cutting word.
