Three elements are present in Traum: text, painting and music. 
The text, written by Paul Klee, is a general reflection on dreams, describing a dream the artist had. Based on this text, resulted a painting composition that metaphorically supported the music – the pictorial lines, shapes, colours, etc., helped creating the musical form, gestures, rhythms, etc.. 
Thus, the conceiving of Traum was a combination of three types of composition that complemented each other in which the musical language is the binding element.

Ich bin bei einem Zauberer
im Garten zu Besuch.
Da steht eine Bank
ganz aus Crimsonrosen. 
Bitte!,
fordert er mich auf zum Sitzen.
Ich tue als ob.
Er setzt sich ohne Miene zu verziehen.
Meine Scheinstellung ist nachgerade peinlich. 
Vis-à-vis steht am Fenster
des Zauberers Tochter,
ich lächle verlegen zu ihr hinauf.
Entrüstet schlägt sie das Fenster zu,

The inspiration for the composition was the work of the French-American painter Yves Tanguy (1900-1955), whose outstanding achievement was the presentation of the collective unconscious as a place - most often in the form of surreal, abstract landscapes. His paintings do not show specific, easily recognizable objects, but the archetypes of thinking, experiencing and behaving, perpetuated through many generations, common to the whole human species. On this vast, collective tissue, an individual develops his personal unconscious. The piece explores the themes of Tanguy's paintings. As the title suggests, the work is a musical journey "to the other side" - to the world of the unconscious, a world beyond time and space, which holds the key to the essential questions of humanity: what is a man? what is his destiny and place in the world? The piece tells about the need for spiritual and social life - striving to get to know oneself, to contact and connect with another human being, to sense a spiritual union with society, and, in a wider dimension, about the need for faith in a higher order of the world.
