Circus

From what I've read Triste Janero was a late 60's quintet from Dallas that played played (something that at the time was) rather out-of-fashion easy listening vocal music that skirted both the border of sunshine pop, and the breezy Brazilian bossanova. 

I've had a hard time finding info about them but I do now that they seemingly only released one album called "Meet Triste Janero" in 1969 that contains a dozen really good easy listening tracks. I'm very fascinated by the fact that even though we live in a society where most questions can be answered through Googling, this band's fate remains a mystery. Just look at the album cover - I want to know badly what became of these guys!

In honor of Triste Janero I decided to make a slightly housed-up re-interpretation of "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice (The Lovin' Spoonful)" from the album mentioned above. I really hope they would approve of me adding my personal touch to their their works 45 years later. Please enjoy. <3

I fell in love with the voice of Angela McCluskey the first time I heard it and since that day she has been one of my absolute favorites being a fantastic singer writer and artist. If you haven't heard listened to her music before I definitely suggest you give it a listen. I took the liberty to do a housed-up verision of her song "Here We Are" to show my appreciation.

This one comes from our very own Carl Richter, co-founder & curator of the Society and long time appreciator. Carl is based in Malmö, Sweden where he's been arranging and playing different club initiatives the last couple of years. He describes himselfs as a "sound explorer and house enthusiast" who likes to blend tunes and makes some own productions on occasion. 

The mix explores Carl's wide array of selection and effortlessly combines his love for for soulful melodic pieces with energetic, percussion driven house music. He says "Even though I'm mostly into what we call house, house is such a wide genre. It could of course be the classic stomp but it could as well diverge both into disco and techno. When I mix I simply try to keep it interesting through devoting to the contrasts." Hi-hats guaranteed.

Appreciation Mix #19: Carl Richter

People who never heard of Marlena Shaw might actually recognize her voice: the clever sample from Marlena Shaws 1973 album "Live in Montreux" combined with the drum intro from Dave Brubeck’s "Take Five" founded the layers for St. Germain’s year 2000 massive loungehit "Rose Rouge".

Marlena Shaw was born Marlina Burgess, September 22, 1942, New Rochelle, New York. She was first introduced to music by her uncle Jimmy Burgess, a jazz trumpet player. In an interview with The New York Times, she told the reporter “He introduced me to good music through records - Dizzy [Gillespie], Miles [Davis], a lot of gospel things, and Al Hibbler, who really knows how to phrase a song.”

Marlena started her career with a single for Cadet Records, making quite an impression already in 1966 with a rare vocal version of Zawinul’s/Adderley’s instrumental "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" backed with "Wade in the Water" - both instant mod classics. Her renditions of jazz, soul and pop tunes didn’t stay unnoticed and shortly after Marlena joined the Count Basie Orchestra, of course taking care of the vocals.

She's been releasing records and performing every decade up until recent days thus proving that talent can't grow old. Her influence as a soul artist is undeniable and throughout the years she's been sampled by producers like DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, Stereo MC’s, and The Game. I too got carried away by her soulful voice and decided I also wanted to fresh up something with Marlena's singing in it. The song I chose is 'Pictures and Memories' from the album "Sweet beginnings" released in 1977 by Columbia Rec, making my version the '39 Years Later Edit'. To put it short - my housed-up tribute to a great artist. I truly hope Marlena would approve of me recycling her voice.

A few friends and myself recently got the possibility to start a club in Malmö, and do it on our own terms. After long discussions about what to name it we finally decided on ‘FAUNA’ - simply due to the fact that even though we might different in many ways we are likeminded when it comes to some things that really matters. We all like music. We all like dancing. We all like meeting new people and uniting in experiences that are bigger than our own selves - and with ‘Fauna’ we aim to provide that opportunity.
 
I recorded this mix partly to showcase what kind of sounds that could be heard in the club, and partly to show what vibes I am into personally. Expect a journey into different shades house, some acid and a dash of techno.

Turned out it was the vocie of Gnučči and that one liner really got me thinking about things. That and the fact that she's from Malmø like myself fueled the idea  of reworking the song to make it playable in a set of my own.

it happens sometimes that the energy I get from hearing someone else's work provides inspiration for trying to make it playable in a set of my of own - and exactly that was the case when I first heard the music of my friends' new project Curiositi.

a result of this encounter was my was my is my interpretation of their 'Lost In Time'. just like the year that passed it has a somewhat melancholic vibe to it but at the same time it's filled with aspirations.

A track from our own @carlrichter, originally written five years ago, featuring spoken word of Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1935-1977), American jazz multi-instrumentalist who was renowned for his onstage vitality and his ability to play several instruments simultaneously. Here an excerpt from his "Bright Moments" (https://youtu.be/0z2E7ZWd0Hc) is used in the foundation in an hommage to all those who - just like ourselves  - are Saturday night people.
