Suspect Radio 054  - October 2024 (Electro, House, Dubtechno)

YUNJIN is a Korean-Canadian musician, producer, and DJ. A beloved collaborator in the Toronto music community, her iconic, sparkly touch on synthesizers and piano can be found in jazz, free-improv, folk, pop, contemporary classical, and electronic music projects from Canada. After studying Jazz piano at Humber College, Toronto, she got into electronic music and playing synths. Inspired by Toronto's underground electronic music scene, she started DJing in 2022. Last year, she moved to Berlin to explore the music communities abroad. She loves playing unlikely genres in her sets, bringing together the diverse musical influences she's absorbed over the years.

It gives us great pleasure to welcome Cersy into our long-running mix series, DETECT.

A secret only to London, Cersy has been very much at the forefront of the North West’s new cultural tidal wave since the turn of the decade, becoming a near-mainstay on line-ups across Liverpool & Manchester.

Part of a new generation of artists that emerged from the ashes of the world’s extended hiatus, the @ Cella Door resident leaves genre boundaries of old lying in the dust, amalgamating breaks, electro, techno & punk into one carefully curated bass-directed sound.

To anyone outside the M25, all this will come as no surprise - the only shock will be how long it took London to notice.

Fourteen years of Uncanny Valley - fourteen years of resisting the predictable, the neatly packaged crap that keeps electronic music stuck in a loop. Dresden's bastard child of a label has survived, thrived and kept its teeth by refusing to be just another name in the endless mess of club culture.

And now Carl Suspect, co-label boss and sonic agitator, is opening up the archive and piecing together something raw, urgent and unfiltered. “14 Years of Uncanny Valley” is a journey through the dark corridors of house, jazz-funk, Italo, ambient and techno - an uncompromising, sweaty ride that feels less like a retrospective and more like a battle cry. And it's all on cassette, because fuck your algorithm-friendly playlists.

This isn't nostalgia. This isn't a victory lap. It's proof that Uncanny Valley still doesn't play by the rules. Carl Suspect puts it on cassette - the rest is noise.

Starting in the mid-nineties, there were a lot of short-lived off-locations in Dresden’s vibrant Drum’n’Bass-Scene which were perfect surroundings for those dark-mechanical tones. Carl Suspect dived deeply into this sometimes shady industrial setting. After he got from Broken Beat and Warp Electronica into Techno and especially early Kanzleramt Records, it were those parties which were groundbreaking for his own musical perception. He discovered that electronic music can only be intense, if it lets you forget about its originator, genre limits and conventions. Thus, to create this kind of listening experience is his first concern when he is playing dance music.

He’s also one of the Uncanny Valley-chiefs, managing not only the everyday work but especially the label’s visual presentation. Doing that, he always strives to realise the initial idea of the label;. to create a network for interaction between artists of different disciplines whereas it doesn’t matter if a record, a flyer or a video work will be the result of this interaction.
