A drone, in musical lingo, is a long or continuously repeated single note, or what we call the hypnotic effect. This term ended up giving name to a branch of minimalist music in the beginning of the 1960's, Drone Music. Drone Music pioneer, La Monte Young, defines this term as: "the sustained tone branch of minimalism".
