Saramago debuts on Lisbon’s Carpet & Snares Records with four slices of deep and groove-laden house. This is an EP of contrasts, the light skip of the A side shadowed by the more driving pulse of the B. Opening with the dubby, weightless house of ‘The Red Room’, Saramago then treats us to a wiggly banger in “Unicorn”, sure to melt today’s dancefloors. ‘Sakaboto’ takes things into darker territory with a focussed acid groove that opens up halfway through with twinkling pads. ‘Happy Endings’ rounds things off with funk and flair, another sure-fire peak-time bumper.

Jorge Caiado and Paul Cut return for another round after their 2020 collaboration on Caiado’s Time & Space LP. Those familiar with the two will know the order of the day: immaculately produced and deeply-felt house music that marries a studio master’s subtlety with a live musician’s flair. Each of these tracks bursts with the essence of soulful house and its jazz forebears, traversing moods that are by turns wistful, playful and go-getting. Cut’s solos on the keys — which recently graced Larry Heard’s latest LP — provide the loose counterpoint to Caiado’s tight production. Inner Balance softly strikes again.

Lay Down The Groove – aka Juan and Matteo, Colombian transplants in Melbourne, Australia – bring a poised US house sensibility to this 5-track EP on their eponymous label, Lay Down The Groove. The legacy of Chicago legends like Gemini and Glenn Underground is palpable in the breezy grooves of ‘The 6-61’ and ‘Space Between’ on the A side, while the jazz-funk of Detroit shines through on ‘Noise In The Data’ and ‘Hidden Lines’ on the B. Finally, ‘No Hard Feelings’ unifies the two sounds to drift off gently over the horizon.

Saudade aka Fabian Appolaire returns to Carpet & Snares’s Patterns series with four refined explorations of jazz-inflected minimal house. As on his debut EP on the imprint, what interests Appolaire is the fundamental units of jazz – syncopation, swing, improvisation – and how these can combine within a stripped-back dance music template. Take the razor sharp arrangement of ‘52nd Street’, where silence is its own instrument, or the stunning melodic unfurling in the back half of ‘Walking’.

Temudo aka João Rodrigues – Hayes Collective member and one of the figureheads of Portuguese techno – brings his finely calibrated contemporary sound to Carpet & Snares’ Steam series. Composed between 2016–2021 and boasting three pieces of floating classic techno and one dubby broken stepper, the EP shows off different sides to Rodrigues’s sound and influences following belter releases on Klockworks, Soma, Warm Up and Hayes.

[CARPET/STEAM02] Temudo - Esquence EP

Vinyl only. In preparation for a stunning archival long-player out later this year, French duo Arcarsenal release their second EP on Inner Balance, containing 4 unreleased tracks that showcase their rich yet stripped-down voyager sound. 'The Analysis', a staple of Arcarsenal's DJ sets, is an unhurried yet potent beginning to open dancers' minds, ready for the tempered dub and intriguing percussion of 'Transcendental Rumble'. 'Helix', with its sustained strings and soft syncopated bassline, harks back to the contemplative B-sides of mid-90s techno, before 'Sweat Lodge Breathing' rounds things out with the kind of rolling groove seen on their earlier track 'The Vessel'.

[IBL14] Arcarsenal - Compendium EP

After the success of Vol. 1, Dublin producer Lukey returns for Other Worlds Vol. 2 on Carpet & Snares’s LAB series, once again blending house, techno, breaks and electro into something cutting-edge and distinctive. The looping grooves, tight percussion and yearning harmonies we fondly remember from the first record are present and correct again across four streamlined club-ready tracks, taking in moods from early hours to peak time.

[CARPET/LAB04] Lukey – “Other Worlds Vol. 2” EP

French-Singaporean duo Dixia Sirong return for their third EP on Inner Balance, the sub-label of Chez Damier’s legendary Balance imprint. Breezy harmonies float over the tightest of grooves in a classy combination that has become the label’s hallmark. ‘Eight’O’Eight’ is a surefire hit while ‘Kashmere’ and ‘Yggdrasil’ will slot in with the best of today’s Berlin-London tech house sound. Closer ‘HK Side’ transcends subcategorisation, its piano and pads reaching for something bittersweet and timeless.

[IBL18] Dixia Sirong – Di San EP

Kitchens inc. is a new label set up by Leeds based DJ and Producer duo, Marcus and Chris Kitchen. The first release comprises of three original tracks of their own material and will appeal to those that seek out genre crossing music. On a minimalist house tip, expect eery off tones and unearthly vocals that are seamlessly woven into understated grooves. Each track has its own personality, switching between 4/4 and breaks with a discordant jazz theme that runs throughout the EP.

[KITCH001] Kitchens Inc. - Missouri Signals EP

Three supple creations mark the start of the ZNR Series by long-established Lisbon producer and DJ, Zenner.  The walking bass and whimsical accents on 'Soulstice' and 'Nightingale Symphony' recall golden age Losoul or Ben Nevile, while 'God Disturbs' provides a daring finale: a hyped-up broken beat formed of a whole cupboard's worth of percussion, around which jazzy bass and sharp pads do a nimble dance. Expect the unexpected as the ZNR Series continues to unfold.

Zenner - ZNR Series #1 Preview

Pliant textures and patient moods are the raw material for the second release from Pandilla Ltd, a Portuguese collective who split their time between Lisbon and Berlin. The contrasts between tight and loose, strict and swung, minimal and jazzy on 'Triangulum Australe' (the Southern Triangle constellation) slips down like 2004-vintage Villalobos.  'Tuni' has a similarly extended runtime, over which improvised and heavily-filtered chromatics bubble excitedly over a bleary backbeat. Four devastatingly precise workouts from two of Portugal's leading techno talents, VOX99 and VIL, drawing on the sound of late-night (and morning-after) raves at some of Lisbon's darkest venues. The dub techno moods found on 'Sqs1' and 'Sqs2' are split by their differing sense of space, the first claustrophobic where the second expands. Rompante - Super Deformed EP (MAD001)#Preview

No homecoming is possible without a departure from somewhere else, and it's this bittersweet truth that sees Light Channel Recordings welcoming DJ Synthesizer back to Lisbon after several years away in Berlin, bringing with him three warm analogue house jams made for airy Atlantic climes. 

The A is home to 'Rudeewelt', an extended rumination built on walkabout acid lines, foundry percussion and stargazing chords and pads. On the B, 'Levi' keeps its eyes on the skies while stepping more firmly onto the floor, its driving kick leavened by shuffling hats and the background squiggles of transistor malfunctions in the second half. Finally, 'Heimat (Lissabon Nostalgia)' brings the beatdown to Portugal, slowing down the tempo and turning up the saudade for a moving, reflective finish.

Two things become immediately clear when you hear “Body Electric”, the third original album by White Haus, João Vieira (X-Wife / Dj Kitten)’s solo project. The first is that we’re faced with an insatiable music lover, with an exemplary historical awareness. The second is that is music, although it channels all that passion, does it in such a way that is increasingly all his own. The thing is, that if on one hand, in these twelve new tracks, we’re assailed by the presence of the tutelary Talking Heads and their satellite projects, by Vivien Goldman, Sexual Harrassement or Konk’s New York No Wave, by the electronic pop of Soft Cell or New Order, by the hybrid funk of Prince and his Minneapolis accollites, by the Italo-Disco inspired by Giorgio Moroder or Patrick Cowley or the Acid House of Adonis or Maurice.  
  
On the other, we’re taken aback by the quasi-kaleidoscopic way in which these references intercross, in unified and totally singular body, and by the intelligence and originality with which they’re incorporated into the songwriting, the classical formula of which is increasingly put into question and the target of reformulations, so often unpredictable and always personal.  

Written and produced by João Vieira, in a small room he shares with his two cats – “Body Electric” – is a mature, solid and autonomous record which points to the future, as it re-equates the entire heritage of the most fracturing urban popular music of the past four decades.

That is what makes it so unique.
