Having carved out a place in the contemporary club scene with releases on Glitterbox/Defected, Boogie Angst & Lovemonk Records amongst others, Madrid’s Casbah 73 recently shed his skin and is now ready to introduce The Jade, a live ensemble that prioritises emotion, excitement and the art of the song. Led by Oli Stewart (Casbah 73), the project brings together a remarkable group of players. At its core, this is about people: musicians in dialogue, shaping rhythms and melody, singing songs from the heart, that shared pulse based on a timeless musical vocabulary.

Opening with the exuberant ‘Let The Light In’, this is sizzling hi-jazz and sunny soul, shot through with a dose of funky afro-latin rhythms for good measure. Josh Hoyer leads the charge, delivering a powerhouse vocal performance, while Nia Martin and Deborah Ayo bring that gospel glow. As, indeed, they continue to do so throughout, especially on the deep, soulful standout ‘When Love Left’ or the shimmering, street soul meets brit-funk feel of ‘Change!’ Experience the spontaneity and playful nature of tracks like ‘Si No Me Quieres Esperar’ (with Cuban maestro Ale Gutiérrez on vocals) infused with funky latin and Brazilian rhythms, as well as sparkling, alien disco dub in the form of ‘Space Lines’. There’s no-holds, hands-in-the-air, fluid disco club grooves on ‘What It Takes’ and driving, riotous, soul-jazz grooves on ‘Being Seen’. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, the band change it up and stretch out with beautiful jazz-funk instrumentals like ‘At The Queensboro’ or lush sonic gem ‘On That Strange’, a track that feels like a long, blissful afternoon fading into evening, with things left unspoken in the air and mystery in its kinky grooves.

The Jade’s sound is post-pout, studs up, raw soul, free from modern dancefloor tyranny. It’s intimate disco, dead-selfie freedom, afro-latin jazz-dance and Iberican funk all rolled into one, rooted in emotion and shot through with a healthy dose of funky bad ass groovism. Genres that blend and bleed into each other following one simple idea: songs and the expressive power of live instrumentation.

Comin’ atcha from behind the Iberican Curtain (Madrid!) and spearheading the resistance, you’ll find Chavi Ontoria on keys and David Salvador on bass, forming the rhythmic foundation. They’re joined by the rousing horns of Josué García and Dani Herrera, and the vibrant voices of Deborah Ayo and Nia Martin. All the way from Montevideo, guitarist Nico Ibarburu weaves his spell-binding grooves, while top-notch artists such as Josh Hoyer, Angela Gooding, Ale Gutiérrez, jazz trumpet player Malcolm Strachan and others broaden and enrich the project’s emotional and musical range.

Love Harder

So, almost without realising it, I'm officially up-to-date on all edits/reworks for Soundcloud, which means I can now get on with the business of adding some brand new ones! This time round there's slinky Brazilian funk from Evinha, laid back soul/funk from unsung hero Willie Wright, a completely reimagined soul-club version of Kevin Moore and an unreleased latin-funk-disco version of "Welcome To The Casbah" featuring Prince Po that I totally forgot I'd recorded at the time of the album's release (ten years ago) and which I've just discoverd on an old hard drive. Best of all, I guess, they're all free to download!

ps I've just added all the previous edits/reworks so that they're all easily accessible from one playlist. Handy or what! Also just added Gospel Soul Revivals and the Freamon edit of "You Deserve To Dance". Freamon is, of course, me.

As a passionate lover of all things soul & disco, it's inevitable I would have more than a passing interest in gospel music. I could go on at length about the subject, believe me, but instead I'll let the music speak for itself. One hour of select grooves with a varied range of influences and one common denominator, that I put together at the request of Husband JF for his Soul Hole radio show on Soho Radio (NYC + Culture).

Originally hailing from NYC but raised in Madrid, Spain where he is now based, Oli Stewart aka Casbah 73 spent the better part of the nineties scouring the US for vinyl, leaving no warehouse intact in his quest for the rare and the downright elusive. His knack for discovering, or bringing to light many an unknown classic, meant his reputation with DJs and producers around the globe was legendary.

"Like many, this enforced absence from dancefloors, from dancing, is something I missed so much this past year, a reality I really couldn't ignore when approaching this mix. It's been a time for taking stock, appreciating what we love, and seeing things from a new perspective.

In light of this, I decided the best thing to do was to simply tear things up, start at the beginning, approach the mix with a totally fresh mindset. Out with old habits and concepts! Shake it all up and see what drops out of the tree. So with this in mind, I fired up the equipment, hit play on the turntables and this, as they say, is what happened next. The result? From Disco to Detroit and back again. The old, the new, with particular emphasis on raw, loose sounds.

I hope you enjoy it and, more importantly, I hope we all get to see each other on a dancefloor somewhere soon!"

Oli Stewart aka Casbah73 is our very special guest for the 22nd episode in our Curtis Radio "10 songs" series. Born in NYC and based in Madrid, he moved to the UK in the 90s where his DJ game was enriched and solidified when he got immersed in the flourishing rare groove, soul, funk, disco and house musical scene. His quest as a voracious digger and professional record dealer takes him around the world in search of the rarest, most elusive and precious slices of wax. As a result his collection grows to monumental proportions. Back to Madrid in the year 2000 he puts all his knowledge and experience to work both in DJ booths and the recording studios, achieving an original and very distinctive Casbah 73 sound and producing a string of high quality releases for labels like Lovemonk, Hitop, Glitterbox/Defected...Picking up only 10 songs out of a 18000 collection must be a big challenge. Includes excerpts from "The Bicentennial Blues", a track which I was none too fond of as a relative youngster, as it seemed to me then that The Blues was something older people invoked whenever they wanted to make you feel like you didn't know anything. I was also irritated by the very specific and (and to my very young self) seemingly meaningless political references in this track. For me back then, it was all about "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised", "Home Is Where The Hatred Is", "The Bottle" or "It's Your World".  

Well, time passes and I went on to become a huge GSH fan, so much so I would probably have been happy to sit and listen to him reading from the phone book, let alone recite the Bicentennial Blues, and what seemed to me almost passé then has proven to be remarkably prescient today: the names have changed, the culprits haven't. 

Let's hope that he achieves the artistic and cultural position he really deserves, and soon.  People like Gil don't come along very often, he will be sorely missed.

Change!

The third single by The Jade to be released from the hotly anticipated Love Harder album (coming soon!). “Si No Me Quieres Esperar” is a slice of pure, playful escapism. With Cuban singer Ale Gutiérrez (of Habana Abierta and El Combo Batanga) at the helm, this is latin samba jazz-fusion at its most flirtatious, a tune that winks at you from across the dancefloor, swaying like a summer breeze through wistful Havana streets or Madrid late nights. Deborah Ayo adds the perfect finishing touch, turning a light-hearted groove into a conversation you want never to end. A playful take on timing and fate, the song dances through the twists of love, trusting that some paths are meant to cross, no matter how far they wander. It’s spontaneity in motion, fresh, fun, and impossible not to smile along with.

What It Takes

When the wicked Savannah - Anaconda 12" first came out (Kif Records, France) , I used to drop snatches of the Love Tribe acappella over it during my sets. It worked so well, and basically, being a lazy sod at heart, I did this edit in order to have the vocals permanently slotted into the groove, with a few added bells and whistles (no cowbell!).

A little back story on this one, for those of you that may be interested. I'd wanted to do an edit of this wonderful track for ages but couldn't figure out how to approach it when along came Mark E with "Scared", an edit which solved the issue of how to deal with the two separate parts of the track beautifully - extend the intro, tease it out and simply drop into the main part of the original, leaving it as is. Brilliant! The only snag for me was that "Scared" wasn't in the style that I was looking for personally. So, I proceeded to copy Mark E's blueprint using a different groove. I filtered the intro and beat, jammed along on keys over the top, working it to the max, before dropping back into the original at the drop. I've had a lot of fun playing this one out over the years, it works equally well in house clubs and soul all-nighters alike. I've left the edit as is,  the way I first recorded it, nice and loose (nothing to do with locating 9+ year old files  on hard drives ;)). I hope you all enjoy it and play it out often and loud!

Evinha - Esperar Pra Ver (Casbah 73 Edit)

Anyone who has spent hours, days, years working in a studio writing and producing music will be familiar with this situation. On a whim, you open up ancient folders on an old hard drive and lo and behold, you discover entire, finished songs you had practically forgotten existed.

On this occasion, I've just stumbled upon an alternate version of "Welcome To The Casbah" featuring Prince Po. It originally came out on my second album, Pushin Forty (https://www.discogs.com/Casbah-73-Pushin40/master/504246), which came out way back when (or, nearly 10 years ago, to be precise).

 ...this one is less sample-based and features me on Fender bass & Strat grooving in a kinda latin-funk-disco sort of vein. After many happy years of playing this amazing, raw gospel number out as a personal dj "weapon" I thought it was time to share my edit with you all so I've given it a brand new makeover, road-tested it and I think you're gonna love this! 

I have many fond memories of seeing people dancing and losing it to this way back when, early 2000s at La Via Lactea. Nobody knew what this stuff was back then (gospel disco/funk?!) but nobody cared either, people just came to dance. It's gratifying when you get your own homegrown scene, lots of records from those days seems to be coming into their own now, which is great, but what was cool then was that nobody cared -  about what anyone else was doing elsewhere, just enjoying our own thing in complete freedom. Good times!

The first time I heard Sivuca's amazing version of "Ain't No Sunshine" was around '89; acid house was all the rage and, quite frankly, pissing me off a little bit, so we decided to organise a rave of our own. One where you could hear all sorts of sounds. Case in point, the DJ dropped the Sivuca bomb at about six in the morning, the sweat was crawling up the walls and people started peeling off their shirts. It just blew everyone's minds. Then the police turned up. Luckily though, it was just some coppers coming off the night-shift and wanting a beer so we let them in and carried on. 

But I never forgot that moment and recently I decided that I really wanted to do a tribute to that great man and his band, of which this was the result.

Manfredo takes us into carnival territory with it's big brass licks, whilst Red Hott gives us some Trouble Funk style rhythms and cut up samples. Sivuca rounds things off nicely with it's nice slowed down part before kicking back in again full tilt. Full Support,

Third and final track from the forthcoming Kat Records 12" release, track B2 and probably my favourite of the bunch. I really went to town on this one, had a lot of fun adding layers of percussion, latin piano, fat brazilian horns and a whole new chorus to blend in with the sweet original, a long time fave track of mine by maestro Manfredo Fest. I hope you enjoy the results!
