CASBAH 73 // STREAM THE SCENE DJ MIX 23rd April 2021

...absolutely nothing! (say it again). Just kidding.

Sometimes it feels like what the world really doesn't need is another mix tape. 

Don't get me wrong, they're great fun to make and often very enjoyable to listen to, but sometimes it feels like nothing particularly interesting is being said. The idea of trying something a little different had been at the back of my mind for a while, I thought it would be interesting and fun to take things a little further. I liked the idea of taking some of the techniques used in creating an edit and applying it to a whole mix, in effect, creating an hour-long edit. 

In my free time. What a geek. 

An hour long edit. Which is what a good, traditional two-turntables-and-a-mixer job really is, right? But in this case all the tracks have been specifically manipulated for the mix, stretching out the grooves, adding rhodes, fx, samples, loops, whatever...layering grooves, with the tracks referencing each other within the mix and with particular attention paid to the transitions by making each one memorable. 
  
The music: lush, deep, sultry, seventies soul, two-step & classics, largely altered, edited and specifically tailored to fit the mood of this particular mix.

It's digital  - of course it is! That's the whole point, really, to explore what's possible using cut'n paste, slicing & dicing techniques. But you're welcome to come round here and stroke the original vinyl if you find that reassuring. I understand.

Soul! What Is It Good For?

As a passionate lover of all things soul & disco, it's inevitable I would have more than a passing interest in gospel music. I could go on at length about the subject, believe me, but instead I'll let the music speak for itself. One hour of select grooves with a varied range of influences and one common denominator, that I put together at the request of Husband JF for his Soul Hole radio show on Soho Radio (NYC + Culture).

Originally hailing from NYC but raised in Madrid, Spain where he is now based, Oli Stewart aka Casbah 73 spent the better part of the nineties scouring the US for vinyl, leaving no warehouse intact in his quest for the rare and the downright elusive. His knack for discovering, or bringing to light many an unknown classic, meant his reputation with DJs and producers around the globe was legendary.

"Like many, this enforced absence from dancefloors, from dancing, is something I missed so much this past year, a reality I really couldn't ignore when approaching this mix. It's been a time for taking stock, appreciating what we love, and seeing things from a new perspective.

In light of this, I decided the best thing to do was to simply tear things up, start at the beginning, approach the mix with a totally fresh mindset. Out with old habits and concepts! Shake it all up and see what drops out of the tree. So with this in mind, I fired up the equipment, hit play on the turntables and this, as they say, is what happened next. The result? From Disco to Detroit and back again. The old, the new, with particular emphasis on raw, loose sounds.

We have been fans of @casbah-73 for quite some time now so this mix is well overdue. We always like to wait for a good moment and the release of his brilliant new single Let's Invade The Amazon on @boogieangst felt like the perfect time to ask him to step up to the Le Visiteur decks.

As we have come to expect from Casbah 73 it's a fusion of cool as you like underground disco and soulful disco edged house keeping the energy high and the vibe super feel-good.

Oli Stewart aka Casbah73 is our very special guest for the 22nd episode in our Curtis Radio "10 songs" series. Born in NYC and based in Madrid, he moved to the UK in the 90s where his DJ game was enriched and solidified when he got immersed in the flourishing rare groove, soul, funk, disco and house musical scene. His quest as a voracious digger and professional record dealer takes him around the world in search of the rarest, most elusive and precious slices of wax. As a result his collection grows to monumental proportions. Back to Madrid in the year 2000 he puts all his knowledge and experience to work both in DJ booths and the recording studios, achieving an original and very distinctive Casbah 73 sound and producing a string of high quality releases for labels like Lovemonk, Hitop, Glitterbox/Defected...Picking up only 10 songs out of a 18000 collection must be a big challenge. @casbah-73 has been very much following his own path over the last few years with seriously tasty releases on Gliterbox, Boogie Angst and Lovemonk. Crafting exciting modern disco he's an artist who is definitely turning all the right heads as well as filling dancefloors to the brim all over the globe.

His latest release see's him back on @Lovemonk for a double header 7" / digital release Doing Our Own Thing / To be Free and to top it all off Lovemonk have brought in none other than disco legend Dimitri From Paris to give his inimitable French touch to Doing Our Own Thing.

The road less travelled - a small selection of diverse, offbeat tunes, ranging from obscure Brazilian soundtracks to French orchestral to West Coast soul, Hungarian and Argentinian jazz to electronica and Native American soul-jazz.

The main criteria was: beautiful but different. Some personal edits of slightly oddball but exquisite stuff. Different, yes, but definitely enticing. Like quinoa and bulgur getting down with kale and hemp on a giant organic cucumber. You know... addictive. An excuse to do something different and also to delve into the deeper corners of my collection. 

Oh fuggit... I admit it, I dug out a bunch rare treats just so I'd have an excuse to put "Gone Feral" in a mix ;p

I think I'll do a club mix for dancing next, house/disco...something that actually represents what I play out ;p

I Love The Build Up

When mixing, I often ask myself:

Which probably explains why I never post mixes online - live is the only true way to play. But I do love the build up. Anything goes, from fabulous underground disco - the best kind - to wonky, fucked up house'n'tech/no - the only kind. 

Unreleased edits, remixes, exclusive tracks, upfront promos. Oh, and that most difficult of genres: "new stuff that's not so new anymore". Casbah 73 is living in Madrid. To date, he has recorded two albums for HiTop Records and a series of disco-influenced 12"s for Lovemonk, and recently he confessed to being the hitherto mysterious producer Freamon, with 2 releases on the vinyl-only Turbocapitalism label. He holds DJ residencies including BASIC, mixing disco, house and electronic, effortlessly genre-straddling with no prejudices and satisfyingly finding his disco sweet spot exactly where it should be – happily shaking its rump on the floor alongside soul, house and techno, like one big happy, dysfunctional family.
October 2020 saw Casbah 73 make his Glitterbox Recordings debut with an insatiably funky slice of disco soul titled ‘Love Saves The Day’. Following on from his 7” single release “Sweet Maybe” on Lovemonk Records, his follow up release is now scheduled for early 2021.
