Going back to the 1980s, Sutherland played in Seattle bands including the Dwindles, Chemistry Set and Model Rockets, and has been a fan of British band Oasis since the mid 1990s. 

Sutherland saw Oasis play at the old Seattle Center Arena 30 years ago, and he's headed to Manchester later this month to see the band's much-heralded reunion tour, which kicked off in Cardiff, Wales on July 4. We also play an excerpt from a recent BONUS EPISODE featuring Ronald Holden and a rare piece of family audio from Europe during World War II.

Heritage Barn Grants are a program of the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP) and are administered by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation.

The USGS has just introduced a new and completely free custom map service aimed at hikers and others who depend on accurate maps for recreational purposes. The custom maps are available to anyone via an online application called topoBuilder.

Ms. Doumbouya also shares the science behind more than a century of USGS maps, and defines many common terms used when discussing topographic maps in particular. Mr. Lovering previewed his history program, and went deep on the early days of the Pacific Northwest Aviation Historical Foundation which preceded the museum, and on the work he did – first as a Loaned Executive from Boeing in 1975, and then as the museum’s first director in 1977.

The City of Des Moines, WA has issued a demolition permit, and the Masonic Home was added by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation to its list of Most Endangered Places. A local grassroots group of concerned Des Moines citizens is leading a legal challenge which will be heard in court in October, and raising money to help cover legal costs.

Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Bud Withers, longtime Northwest sportswriter and author of a new history about the Apple Cup - the annual cross-state college football rivalry game between the University of Washington Huskies and Washington State University Cougars. The first meeting of the two teams was in 1900, and this year will mark the 117th edition of the Apple Cup (it was cancelled a few times in the past due to wars and pandemics).

Withers' book is called “Too Good to Be Through: The Apple Cup is Distinctive (and in Peril).” In this interview, he talks about the history of the game, and the recent conference realignment which has meant moving the game from late November to mid September, and which may mean it goes away entirely after 2028.

This year's Apple Cup will be played on Saturday, September 20, 2025 in Pullman, Washington. Bud Withers spoke to CASCADE OF HISTORY on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.
