The City of Des Moines, WA has issued a demolition permit, and the Masonic Home was added by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation to its list of Most Endangered Places. A local grassroots group of concerned Des Moines citizens is leading a legal challenge which will be heard in court in October, and raising money to help cover legal costs.

Feliks Banel's guest on this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Bud Withers, longtime Northwest sportswriter and author of a new history about the Apple Cup - the annual cross-state college football rivalry game between the University of Washington Huskies and Washington State University Cougars. The first meeting of the two teams was in 1900, and this year will mark the 117th edition of the Apple Cup (it was cancelled a few times in the past due to wars and pandemics).

Withers' book is called “Too Good to Be Through: The Apple Cup is Distinctive (and in Peril).” In this interview, he talks about the history of the game, and the recent conference realignment which has meant moving the game from late November to mid September, and which may mean it goes away entirely after 2028.

This year's Apple Cup will be played on Saturday, September 20, 2025 in Pullman, Washington. Bud Withers spoke to CASCADE OF HISTORY on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

Ep. 120: Pancake Chef in SeaTac to close; plus Ryan House, ASUW Shellhouse and D.B. Cooper Update

CASCADE OF HISTORY learned late Monday, September 22, 2025 that Dr. Quintard Taylor, History Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, has passed away.

Dr. Taylor contributed incalculably to Pacific Northwest history and to Black history. He was author of “The Forging of a Black Community: Seattle’s Central District from the 1870s through the Civil Rights Era,” and founder of the website www.blackpast.org.

CASCADE OF HISTORY’s Feliks Banel spoke with Dr. Taylor in August 2020 for the old “Columbia Conversations” podcast for the Washington State Historical Society. Dr. Taylor had recently retired, and an updated edition of "Forging of a Black Community" had recently been released.

CASCADE OF HISTORY has been covering the threatened closure of the Lewis Army Museum at Joint Base Lewis McChord near Tacoma for the past few months. As we have reported, Lewis Army Museum is one of many U.S. Army museums targeted for closure around the United States and at bases overseas.

While researching the threatened closure of the Army's Harbor Defense Museum at Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton, Ms. Tsai discovered what she believes is a pattern that reveals why some Army museums were added to the planned closure list and others were not.

According to Josephine Tsai's research, it all seems to come down to one thing: local history.
