On this summertime edition of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present audio from "Evergreen Radio: LIVE," a special event focused on the past, present and especially the future of radio in the Pacific Northwest. In this archival panel discussion, a group of radio professionals from around Washington weigh in on where the medium had been and where it was headed in 2015. Panelists include Ricardo Garcia of Radio Cadena; Jeff Hansen of KUOW; Tom Mara of KEXP; LPFM advocate Sabrina Roach; Dave Ross of KIRO Newsradio; and Kerry Swanson of NW Public Radio.

The event was co-produced by CASCADE OF HISTORY producer/host Feliks Banel and Olivia Weitz. It was taped before a live audience at the Richland, WA campus of Washington State University on April 25, 2015 - Ed Murrow's birthday - and was a project of the Edward R. Murrow College, with financial support from Humanities Washington.

Corbin and Banel interview historians and aviation experts - including Knute Berger, historian Mike Lombardi of Boeing, Ted Huetter of the Museum of Flight and US Air Force Brigadier General Frank Goodell - and provide live coverage and color commentary on the centennial festivities organized by the Friends of Magnuson Park. Thank you to special guest Jay of Jay's Radio Hour for spinning 78rpm discs from 1924 to mark the occasion. Ep. 79: LIVE from the Centennial Celebration of the Around the World Flight

Feliks Banel’s guest on this live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY is Bob Blackburn, Jr., son of legendary "Voice of the Sonics" Bob Blackburn. The elder Blackburn was born on October 14, 1924, and this special program was presented in honor of the centenary of one of the most beloved broadcasters in Pacific Northwest history. Bob, Jr. shared memories of his father, and played highlights from a treasure trove of vintage audio from his father's broadcasts of Portland Buckaroos hockey, Portland Beavers baseball, OSU football and, of course, the Seattle Supersonics (including a postgame interview from 1971 with Wilt Chamberlain).

Ep. 80: VOICE OF THE SONICS Bob Blackburn Centenary Celebration

Feliks Banel’s guests on this live broadcast of CASCADE OF HISTORY are a panel of expert local historians, researchers and authors who have been collaborating on a search for evidence of Peter Kirk's long-ago steel mill on Rose Hill, east of downtown Kirkland near the Costco. Matt McCauley, Kent Sullivan, Saundra Middleton (who is a descendant of Peter Kirk) and Michael Donnelly have been studying archives, maps, photos and other materials to paint a vivid picture of the partial construction of the mill in the 1890s, the specific whereabouts of various buildings and structures, as well as the ultimate fate of the site (and of Kirk's venture) in the early 20th century.

The group will be presenting two free illustrated public programs at Heritage Hall in Kirkland in October and November. The first will take place Wednesday, October 30 at 7:00 pm; the second will take place on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:00 pm.

Ep. 83: Burgermaster, Vancouver SkyTrain, Mystery Movie Pics, Lake Court Apartments

On this special holiday season episode of CASCADE OF HISTORY, we present Chris Wedes (better known as KIRO TV clown J.P. Patches) and Bob Newman (better known as J.P.'s pal Gertrude) in "A Homefront Christmas," an original radio play first broadcast on KIXI AM 880 in Seattle in December 2001.

Wedes and Newman played a washed up vaudeville act who are coaxed out of retirement to put on a show to cheer up the homefront in Seattle. The action is set in 1941 just after Pearl Harbor, and also stars Tracey Conway, Dave Dolacky and Bob Brooks. Sound effects were performed by David Persson; music was pre-recorded especially for the show by Stan Boreson. "A Homefront Christmas" was written, produced and directed by Feliks Banel, and recorded before a live audience at the old Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) in Seattle a few hours before the broadcast.
