I'm not sure what I would do without music. I often tell people that music is my primary escape in life, but that's taken on a whole new meaning in the wake of my injury. The recovery process has been at times frustrating and slow for someone so used to being on the move. I had to work in short bursts over the course of a few weeks, finding new music here, building my Live session there, and working on the mix in painful 30 minute chunks. It felt like I was learning everything all over again, but it gave me something to do and it forced me to think through every small decision. I don't think its a coincidence that I finally started to feel like myself as I finished up the mix last week. It truly feels like the music in this mix saved my life, and hopefully it can be a small part in helping yours.

A huge thank you to all of the artists' music that I used. Everyone should check the tracklist below and be sure to take a minute to listen to their music.

About "G R I M O I R E":
Swedish duo VALHALL returns with its second album, Grimoire, available in February 2018 on Artoffact Records.

A grimoire is a book of magical knowledge. Such a book may contain lists of angels and demons, directions on casting charms and spells, on mixing medicines, summoning unearthly entities, and making talismans. Grimoires contain secret knowledge and have been in use since ancient times.

The grimoire of VALHALL is inspired by, but not limited to, such knowledge. It draws its power from the ancient and the current, from the arcane and the technological. It serves to give the listener excerpts of fantasies and folklore, myths and truths, dreams and nightmares. Grimoire is a collection of electronic darkwave songs, wrapped in a coat of witchhouse and neofolk, that VALHALL is known for.

Features guest violin contributions by Jessica Pimentel (Maria Ruiz in Orange is the New Black), lead singer of the Brooklyn-based metal band Alekhine's Gun. Pimentel also recently contributed vocals to Origin's Nuclear Blast release Unparalleled Universe and has said that Valhall is one of her favourite bands.

Set for release on November 23, 2018 on 10” vinyl and digital download, it’s another smart, refreshing, surprising and laugh-out-loud funny set of joyously unvarnished songs in the extraordinary and distinctive idiom of multi-instrumentalist and composer Serafina Steer. MXMS is short for “Me and My Shadow" and is singer Ariel Levitan and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Dawson.   The self-produced duo from New York City and small-town Oklahoma creates funeral pop fusing classic melodic songwriting with dark unfiltered chaos driven by a thousand forms of fear.

“Gravedigger” is both a winter cry of sexual freedom and an macabre warning to future ill-intended suitors of Ariel.  Moving gracefully through a flow of grinding synthesizers and drum machines, Ariel reveals her story that twists from danger to desire with a dash of resentment singing:

Six deep swim with fish
floating on the river
You're going on a devil dance
do the Macarena
black on my eyes
and they cold as a cadaver
i'm immortal motherfucker
can't see me in the mirror
 
Using visual audio and cinematic foley, producer and keyboardist Jeremy Dawson weaves samples of fire, car crashes and electrical storms with crushed beats and oscillating bass to push the lyric into a viewable interpretation.   It’s a future forwarded peak hour low tempo banger with a dead-end result for the antagonist.
