After last month’s detour by Mexico for the Bluehost EP ‘We Need You’, Jerry Bouthier’s London-based label Continental hops across the channel to hook up with Middle for the release of his stunning debut single ‘In Your Way’.

Located by the Mediterranean Montpellier, France’s 8th city twinned with Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona and Louisville USA, is famous for its huge student community and thriving nightlife. Part of the city’s bubbling electronic/dance scene 24 year-old Steve ‘Middle’ Stullgens is a talented musician who stands out from the lot for crafting… UK house. Surprisingly on the ball, fresh, innovative and damn funky, Middle’s compositions are not only unusual coming from a Frenchman, they’re also tastily groundbreaking not least for their musicality, inspired chord sequences and sonic dynamics.

A self-taught musician who started playing bass in punk bands at the age of twelve, Middle soon caught the programming bug and started to produce tunes in his bedroom, exploring genres until he eventually settled on house with a strong UK flavor a couple of years ago (“I love it cos it’s so groovy!”). After a string of free downloads which quickly attracted attention in Europe and as far as the US (his first track ‘Girl’ was snapped up by EDM.com and has clocked up 75,000 Soundcloud plays to date), Middle’s name’s soon getting bigger and bigger in the right circles, and deservedly so.

‘In Your Way’s no-nonsense original is a beautifully chiseled piece of futuristic house, both moving and griping at the same time, complete with euphoric peaks and enchanting melodic breakdowns (that vibraphone). Peppered by snippets of tweaked soulful vocals, synth chords and wooshes pulsate like heartbeats to the repetitive 4/4 injecting powerful tension to the dancefloor.

Remix-wise, Continental labelmates Reflex – coincidentally also From Montpellier – deliver a dreamy rewrite that’s still 4/4 but slower and sexier. Another local, DJ/producer Kaviar exercises his future beats magic and turn things around dramatically. Next Sergey Ledovskiy’s project Ledaux – a Russian based in San Francisco - takes the song into housey disco territory. To finish - other new French kid on the block - Aimeric Miriel AKA The Vein offers his own take on futuristic beats, soundtracky and vibey.

House Music unfolds as one long piece, a recorded-then-sculpted improvisation that vastly expands their work, coalescing classical and electronic instrumentation in the creation of genre-defying musical worlds.

After having shared the short film IX: Nature That’s It That’s All. — which layered archival visuals of blissed-out crowds at a carnival over one of the later, dreamier sections of House Music — Bell Orchestre presents a video for the one-track album’s most anthemic and explosive segment, V: Movement, directed by band-member Kaveh Nabatian.

In the album’s liner notes, the group recalls countless moments when, in kinetic moments of improvisation, “a nuanced piece of music would emerge organically, completely formed, without any plan or discussion or rational thought” — and then be lost because it wasn’t recorded. In conceiving a new album, they decided to celebrate the spontaneous and accidental, to centrally situate the act of collaborative, democratic creation in their finished work. With the legacies of improvisation-exploring greats like Talk Talk, The Orb, Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis and the late Ennio Morricone in mind, on House Music, Bell Orchestre captures the impulsive, connective, mysterious poetics of musical invention happening in real-time.

Dutch composer Rutger Hoedemaekers makes his debut solo release with a stunning album that marks the culmination of a decade spent in the hyper-creative studio environment he co-founded in Berlin, including four years working closely alongside Jóhann Jóhannsson. Sonically rich, emotionally deep, and immaculately handled, 'The Age Of Oddities’ showcases a brilliant new talent, its cinematic eloquence bearing witness to Rutger’s experiences composing for film alongside Oscar-winner Hildur Guðnadóttir and Jóhannsson, for whom the album is partly a eulogy.

Whilst paying homage to Jóhannsson, ‘The Age Of Oddities’ sees Hoedemaekers forging his own sound and vision. It’s a bold and forward-thinking record, with a rich, hybrid sound seeing vocals processed and blurred alongside brass parts and a wall of strings shadowed by Rutger’s understated, textural electronics. Beautifully scored, immaculately performed and recorded, the album utilises the power of Budapest Art Orchestra’s 23-piece string ensemble conducted and co-orchestrated by Viktor Orri Árnason, alongside vocals (Kira Kira, Theatre of Voices’ Else Torp and Laura Jansen), horn (Morris Kliphuis), trombone (Hilary Jeffery) and violin (Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and Viktor Orri Árnason), with Hoedemaekers contributing trumpet, piano, keyboard and electronics.

Born out of a shared creative environment during a time of personal as well as social change, ‘The Age Of Oddities’ is a powerful and emotive work that closes a deeply productive yet also dark and heavy period for its creator.  It sees Hoedemaekers finally stepping out into the spotlight after many years working behind the scenes, revealing a hugely talented new composer who is surely one to watch in coming years.

Postiljonen is a dream pop trio deriving from Scandinavia. The band emerged quietly back in September 2011 and is composed of Norwegian vocalist Mia Bøe alongside Swedish multi-instrumentalists Daniel Sjörs and Joel Nyström Holm.

After releasing a handful of online only singles in their native Scandinavia (including the heartbreaking interpretation of Whitney Houston’s classic ‘How Will I Know’, renamed here to ‘All That We Had Is Lost’) the trio have managed to create a highly characteristic sound, where ethereal and alluring vocals are interwoven in a mystical, ambient, dreamy and lovable expression. They have been compared to the likes of M83, Air France, Sigur Ros, jj and Cocteau Twins.

Taking inspiration from old black and white movies, the golden 80s, Balearic scenery, sleepless summer nights and describe themselves as nostalgic daydreamers, all of which mirrors beautifully within Skyer’s ten songs.

Featuring singles ‘Supreme’ and Atlantis’, Skyer is summery pop music at its best; made for lazy days and dreamy nights.

Skyer is released on July 22 2013.
