Darian is a DJ/Producer based in Brooklyn, New York. As a producer they’re best known for their collaborations with Tomu DJ and their debut  EP  “Surprised Emoji” released on Sorry Records. They’ve also self-released two EP’s and have a track on the Jukebouncewerk compilation JBDUBZ Vol. 8. As a DJ they experiment with many different genres in their mixes, focusing on the energy of a mix rather than any specific genre.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. As equally silly as I am serious. Someone described me as a mystery wrapped inside of an enigma recently and I had to agree.....

Q. What brought you to Philly from the UK? How did you get involved in the music scene in NYC?
A. It’s interesting when people ask me this question because although I appreciate that that's a big move, I truly don’t feel grounded anywhere on this planet. Yes Philly is home, my little sanctuary away from the chaos of my job, which pre-covid revolved around touring. People always find it amusing when I say I found a little peace here but that’s really my truth.

The notion of constantly traveling feels extremely normal for me. I am nomadic in that sense but I did live in NY for a long time and have played all types of spaces there from the ground up. I still feel attached to NY, we have a love hate relationship with each other, and pre-covid I would at the very least have two performances there a month. My party SELTZER has a residency there at Nowadays. We’ll forever be connected, I just cant live there (for now).

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. Well I really enjoyed having a prompt from you! “Something to smoke to” as someone that (self medicates) smokes all day everyday, this was exciting. I never really approach mixes with a specific theme like that, I normally approach a mix with 100% of my emotions. Which will obviously always be the case, but a prompt like that gives me more room to have fun with it.

The first draft was extremely literal I had to scrap it, it was weed song after weed song lol. But lmk when you hear “Puff the Magic Dragon” blended in with “I Don’t Smoke the Riffa”. I have my QUEEN Whitney Houston over an Aphex Twin track on the intro. RIP legend. I also included every song I released this year. Actually my first time having the opportunity to blend these songs, sometimes B2B, so thank you for that.

Generally I think it's a little more relaxed then my regular but we are on stoned time, but you can find my usual chaos and mania in there. I named it "INDICA DOMINANT" because nobody is smoking sativa. It was raining when I was recording and half way through there was a big leak over my equipment but everything is fine, I finessed it. I think it was an ancestral blessing tbh.
