Plot Summary


The film begins with a flashback to five days after the end of the Civil War. Thomas recognizes the message as a clue to Cibola, the city of gold, and realizes that Booth and O'Laughlen are still loyal to the South and have a sinister motive for finding the treasure. He rips several pages from the diary and throws them in the fireplace. O'Laughlen shoots Thomas and flees with one page fragment. Thomas tells his son Charles that "the debt that all men pay" is death before dying.


In present day, Ben Gates tells his great-great-grandfather's story at a Civilian Heroes conference. Mitch Wilkinson, a black market dealer and descendant of 
O'Laughlen's ancestor, shows a page from Booth's diary that implicates Thomas Gates as a co-conspirator in Lincoln's murder. Ben is shocked and determined to clear his ancestor's name by finding the truth behind the missing pages.


Ben learns from his father Patrick that the clue "the debt that all men pay" refers to death, and that there is a secret book that contains the truth about American history, known as the President's Book of Secrets.
