Just got my D850 and I can't figure out how to access the flash control menu. It remains grayed out no matter what external flash I put on the camera hot shoe to trigger additional flashes. I've tried a SU-800, SB-800, SB-910 configured as masters. When I select the menu, I get a pop-up that says "This option not available at current settings or the cameras current state." I have flash enabled. Not sure what else to try. I've previously used a D810 and used Commander mode to trigger multiple external flashes. I'm stuck trying to figure out how to do the same with the D850.


The Flash Control menu is only available when an SB-5000, SB-500, SB-400 or SB-300 is mounted. I don't have a D850 to check, but with other Speedlights I presume you must use the controls on the Speedlight itself.


You need to attached the the WR-A10 ( WR-R10 attaches to the WR-A10) remote to the camera and then you will be able to access the required option in the flash control menu. The D850 is geared for radio flash control only. Hope this helps.


I assumed - wrongly - that any Nikon flash or optical commander put in the hot shoe of the D850 could be used to control external flashes through the in-camera Flash Control menu. The manual is pretty confusing on this. What I found was that only certain models of Nikon flashes support "Unified Flash Control". These are flash units that exchange control information with the camera flash control menu.

I was able to get a shoe mounted flash to operate in master mode and trigger external flashes from the D850. I got the SU-800 and SB-910 to trigger an external flash. But the flash mode and power levels of each slave can only be controlled through the settings on the master. This is very inconvenient.


I understand that it's different from what you're accustomed to doing, but is it really "very inconvenient"? Maybe it's because (on a D810, D5 and D500) I always control remote Speedlights using an on-camera SU-800 or SB-900.


Nikon has just given me yet another reason to add more Metz 64 AF-1 flashes, rather than Nikon Speedlights. If I have to control the flashes with the menus on the flash bodies, anyway, I prefer the easier-to-see, user-friendlier Metz flashes. I recently acquired my first Metz 64 AF-1, and really like it.


I was flipping through the menus trying to get to something else when I saw the vignette control. It was set to Normal, so I set it to Off. I have been having trouble getting my flats to calibrate (may be unrelated), so wondered if this feature could contribute to that. I suppose it affects flats as well as lights, but it seems better to have it off. Is that correct?


Sorry, you lost me. I am interpreting your reply as "No, vignette control doesn't matter". To me, this means, it does not have any effect, which implies it does not matter whether it is ON of OFF. I've been playing it since its closed beta stage in late 2012. Although I prefer old fashioned racing leagues/clubs over the official ranked events, so I have little experience with the latter, but it has been positive, the rookie servers can sometimes be a touch too chaotic, but it's quite easy to ramp up the rating with a few clean races.

Yep, that's my experience so far. Generally I'm mid-pack so a prime target for dive-bombing. I suspect it'd be better to just start from the back each race and wait for the usual suspects to take themselves out.

Interview with the Vampire

 is a 1994 American gothic horror film directed by Neil Jordan, based on Anne Rice's 1976 novel of the same name, and starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
