Make Me A Bird

‘Cloudy’ is an amalgamation of bass driven grooves and vocal acrobatics over a silky smooth electric piano. This is Rubber’s first solo single after their debut 2-part project that landed them radio play from NPR and a (cancelled) showcase at SXSW 2020. This tune represents a new direction for the duo, leaning deeper into their Neo-Soul and R&B influences 

‘Cloudy’ started off as a joke song that John and Andrew made just to clear their systems and remind them to have fun during the writing process. In the early stages, the pandemic put so much extra pressure on artists to be prolific creators, this was a needed relief of that pressure. They quickly recorded the demo late one night, laughed at the lyrics and left it alone for a couple weeks. During a writing retreat in rural Maryland this past August, they reworked the lyrics and John created a completely new instrumental around the expanded lyrics. 

The song, after a couple different iterations, wound up being about naive notions of success. “I could be my only boss you could be your only boss too” is one of the main lyrics of the hook, and throughout the song, Andrew references the entrepreneurial lifestyle of artists, the childish-feeling dreams of comfort and stability, and the carelessness of youth, in a punny, soothing R&B package.
