Palliative care patients and their families are hiring me to grant them a final music wish. I talk to the patient or family member on Zoom to get a sense of what kind of music they would like me to compose for them to listen to on their final journey. They might want to float away to a gentle flute score with winter scenes playing visually or something more lively with electric and acoustic guitars, or something soft and sublime with keyboard or piano. Sometimes they want me to create a video to go with the music, and they pick what they want to see.

In return, they contribute to the Jane LeBlanc Legacy Fund.
This is my latest composition, Winter Interlude. Unfortunately, the person I composed this for is no longer with us. It lightens my heart to know that they began their final journey while listening to Winter Interlude with their family and watching the winter scenes video; they loved winter. I hope it gave them all some peace. ❤️

I wish I had done this for my sister Janey, but she probably would have wanted me to compose a heavy metal score that would have blown the walls out. 😇

Winter Interlude

I don't think of prayer as a passive activity, but actively engaging and dialoguing with God about the state of affairs be it personal or of late, international in scope and consequence.  I am praying for Ukraine that their show of strength in the face of tyranny may be rewarded with freedom and peace. I'm praying also for Russia, a land of vast wealth and beauty, for the people whom I have come to know and love on the Cloud, that they may know it is a bad actor and not them who is to blame for the shadow that has fallen upon Europe, and in a broader sense, over all of civilization.  Peace is not the exception to human existence, bullets and bombs are.  Love is the state of normal we want to have, not hate.  I offer in this guitar meditation a prayer for peace.

I wrote this short sonata on paper almost 25 years ago and just found it while doing a clean-up in my basement. I did the transcript on Logic Pro and then tried to make it sound as if a good pianist was playing it. The notation on Logic is garbage but since my writing is as unbearable as the sketch of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 28, I am quite happy that I was able to even read most of my score. I probably fixed some booboos on the way. 

The title is based on the old music joke “What do you get when you drop a piano on a mineshaft? … A flat minor.”  John Cage did similar jokes as you should know ;o)

Ho, and by the way -273.15 C is the absolute zero. It is a mockery as I believe I went a long way in my composition since I wrote this. 

Nevertheless, I am sharing it should it be of some interest for the pianist community.

Dear friends,
first I want to thank Ukraine for an absolutely wonderful Eurovision schlager festival in Liverpol. I also thank Great Britain and Liverpool for a great arrangement. Wonderful presenters!
All this took place in the midst of the horrific war against Ukraine.
Many volunteers have traveled to Ukraine from various places to help the victims of the war. They should be honored!

The Journey to Ukraine

They went for a journey to the Ukranian town

The Journey to Ukraine

Relatively compliant with Johann’s score (so far as you know)….poetic licence (ie a coach and horses) appear to have been driven through certain measures (and to a lesser extent, dynamic range notation), in response to which I rely upon, by way of mitigation, the excuse that Rubato made me do it(rhythmic shaping and/or contortion of tempo within the otherwise static/prescriptive confines of selectively iterated measures). Can roses grow, from the ashes of my Rubato sins? Read on.

Part II (not yet posted) will comprise variations on this same piece. Fasten your seatbelt. Estimated completion date 20 July 2023.

I heard variations singing in my mind, when rubato ran amok. Hopefully it will all make sense when the variations are complete, though in all likelihood, it will not (make sense).

Inspired by a miraculous performance of JS Bach by French composer pianist and flautist Douvin. Your time is better spent hearing Douvin's piece, which is here, the work of a true master. J'adore Douvin. Everything he does is breathtakingly beautiful.
