TR Tactics is back with their signature powerful sounds and iconic neuro-sounding drum and bass. Renewing their style the well-known Austrian duo is providing us with two tracks where everything is in place.

Illuminate is a track that either makes you run and run fast or it makes you lose your mind on the dance floor, either way you can’t sit calmly when it is blasting in your ears. The clean riffs and hard-hitting drums make this track the forerunner of neu-neuro, which would be a more popular family to the old neuro sounds. Illuminate juxtaposes the traditional sound design of neuro and a more minimalist build-up that makes it flow unstoppably.

Dark Universe on the other hand –nomen est omen- is more classical in the neurofunk sense, it takes us deep into the void, the non-observable, the mysterious. The drums are massive and the track nicely incorporates some techno vibe. The lengthened notes let the listener lose total control.

I can see Milla Jovovich’s determined face going against zombies, outnumbered… Total Resident Evil vibe.

The hotbed of Essex has continued to deliver some of the most cutting edge drum & bass imprints. However, Druid Records have set the agenda for the genre’s darker realms within this creative breeding ground, gaining more and more notoriety within its underbelly whilst pushing a certain level of production within each one of its releases. Their forthcoming EP features a host of artists who also focus on this breed of sound, hailing from different sides of the European market and all bringing their deliciously slick, yet aggressive, version of the darkest regions drum & bass offers on its sonic soundscape. 
 
Spanish producers Kursiva and Qhymera join forces for ‘Rush’, bringing together a wide ranging musical scope which encompasses both their skill within the studio and behind the decks. Blunt rhythms and a solid mix give way to the impeding madness of ‘Rush’, which channels the energy prevalent within every part of Kursiva and Qhymera’s chaotic production style. With an impeccable engineering and a vibrancy within their drum patterns and carefully layered composition, the track appeals to the dancefloor as well as the madness of any moodily snapping DJ set. Its clattering, percussive elements and steeply stabbing synth patterns shows the ingenuity behind their approach, signalling why Druid asked them to join their ranks.  
 
For the second part of Druid’s release, Akrom and Dabs take on remix duties. Italian maestro Dabs draws out a familiar monster for his retake on ‘Rush’, paying heed to its roots yet still managing to twist his signature throughout an intimidating skeleton. And finally, Akrom delivers another smashing take, having already graced the back catalogue of Druid Records with previous singles he’s been asked once again to take pride of place alongside its army of talent. Akrom adds his unbridled creativity into the track’s original composition, adding a more streamlined, weightier sound which still cuts as deep with every added layer. The full EP pulls together four artists who won’t compromise on their production. The exact attitude Druid has maintained from the start, which is why they’ve created such a high standing platform within the very fabric of drum & bass.

Although the Juno identity has only been around since late 2016, the Spanish producer has long been influential in the world of bass music through previous aliases Aphex and Pheex, receiving support from the likes of Krewella, Far Too Loud, Evol Intent, DJ Bl3nd, and more, as well as several award nominations from DJ Mag, International Breaks Awards, and Breakspoll.

With the massive ‘Raptor’ on last year’s ‘Summer Slammers’ compilation on Viper Recordings, followed hot on the heels with ‘Red Blocks’ (which received massive support from Insomniac) on 2018’s annual, Juno has paved the way for future success with the label, evident in ‘Akira’ and ‘Truth In The Skies’.

‘Truth In The Skies’ features the lyrical genius of Dutch native, Innate MC, known for his work with A.M.C.’s Titan Records. Another dark and gritty tune, great attention is given to the build-up of every drop, creating a sense of suspense from start to finish matched only by the tune’s incredible adrenaline.

‘Akira’ is a tech-inspired, bass heavy thumper of a track that is sure to please fans of the darker side of the genre. Deep, thudding bass backs a gritty, neuro-infused melody that constantly evolves as the track progresses, giving the track an almost haunting edge.

The levels that underground labels like Kosen Productions continue to push have ensured the imprint has stayed on the agenda’s forefront. And this remains the same ethos for their next release, returning to the heavily skilled, crashing sounds of Maniatics, three producers who made their name on Kosen and who now help to spearhead its discography. The Sevilla based outfit, having also released on the likes of Titan Records, Eatbrain and Viper, deliver two brand new records which signify why they’re such an imperative part of Kosen. And having started its path in 2011, the French label has thrived within drum & basses independent market, pushing forward both burgeoning newcomers and more heavyweight figures. Whether it’s Signs, The Clamps, Nickbee or Maniatics themselves, Kosen has offered up some of the artists’ most resounding cuts. 

‘I’m Gonna Kill You’ and ‘Enough On My Conscience’ are no different, two undeniably huge records which go to show why Kosen were so hotly tipped after discovering the trio from relative obscurity. The single’s A-side ‘I’m Gonna Kill You’ begins as you’d expect from a Maniatics track. It’s cutting, whilst each slab of unforgiving drum patterns hit harder and harder as they loop between its flying percussion. There’s a hook which grapples with you between every slamming breakdown and this is why you’ll be hearing it across clubs throughout the next few months. The outfit know how to make an impact and this is clear to see through the ruthless dancefloor appeal of ‘I’m Gonna Kill You’. 

Then on the reverse, ‘Enough On My Conscience’ is just as destructive, slicing through with punching stabs of bass and hollowed up drum throws, with each slamming just as hard as the last. You become entangled in the destructive throws of Maniatics, alongside each one of their carefully fashioned layers of engineering, as despite how explosive their style is they’re still meticulous in their creation. Bringing together two huge tracks, Maniatics aren’t hitting the brakes on their career anytime soon. They’re making their way to the top, with Kosen presenting another rung on the ladder and a home for their tearaway pieces of art.
