I composed Spirit Unbound in honour of a Ukrainian man (a relative of a close Ukrainian friend of mine) who was captured and tortured by the Russians, and who remains "bound".  If he were free today, this piece would not be so relevant.  In the piece, one can hear the tumult of this horrific Russian invasion, balanced with music of hope, and fragments of the Ukrainian National Anthem. Those listening may reflect on the war and the impact on the people of Ukraine.  The piece, commissioned by concert pianist, Amelia Grace Yates, is world-premiered by her in this recording at the Hamilton Halton ORMTA Teachers in Concert, Port Nelson United, Burlington, Ontario, March 26, 2023.
