Kidnap is an artist whose music overflows with emotion - rich and powerfully evocative.

Recording in London, Kidnap (real name Matthew Relton) likens his process to that of a sculptor, starting with a block of sound and chopping away until a shape emerges. As such, each song exists ornately carved with a handcrafted subtly.

Still just 33, Relton is already something of an industry veteran. Releasing his first single in 2012 kicked off an eight-year stretch of global touring that came to a grinding halt when the pandemic put the world on pause.

2024 marks a new chapter for Kidnap, with his next body of work on the horizon. Set against the backdrop of a changing world and the arrival of a baby daughter, Relton offers a bittersweet reflection on the passing of time. ‘It’s about looking back on the last 12 years — the touring and the friends and the sleeplessness,” says Relton, “and realising that in order to embrace the life I have now, I need to let it all go.’ The music shimmers with nostalgia. Signature sad melodies dance deftly around commanding synth lines, altogether sounding like an artist with a new found sense of purpose.

This page is kinda defunct. I don't go by this alias anymore. But i still do music. I'm leaving this page up though cuz it's a reminder and testament to how music and art and creative endeavors should be invested in wholeheartedly if the opportunity presents itself. music, djing, turntablism, chose me, and all in the most tangible and organic way at that. I didn't and still don't feel like i have much of a say in it if i'm being honest. This is more or less where i came up from. very literally my homies front porch in Sarasota, Florida, playing music for some of the most talented dancers, fire spinners, bboys and bgirls, and a handful of other beautiful, strange, wonderful, bad ass mother fuckers, the kind of people that authors and writers use as characters in books and movies.
I'm still just mixing records, exploring sound, letting the 808's bang, letting the music speak for itself, creating a rhythm, a pulse, where everyone including me can be ourselves, move how we wanna if we wanna move. and if i have any say in any of it i'm picking out tunes that gunna have us feelin like bad ass mother fuckers when that bass drops. i get geeked when I'm able to play music that when people hear it, they gotta move. 

These mixes were recorded live, and you're hearing me figuring out how to dj. Whenever songs line up and it's dope, i was just as shocked and excited as everyone that I was playing music for. These mixes are me learning how to do this shit. To paint a better picture, I was playing music for people who were exploring dance and fire spinning and some were doing visual art and painting and all of that. Many at a very advanced level. And this is the way i came to understand dj'ing. by creating the soundtrack for people to move to. by mixing records together that move us. I never set out to be a dj, and i sure as hell didn't set out to be an "EDM DJ" and that's always been a weird kind of title or idea that many people use to try to conceptualize what it is that i do. I mix records. I play music for people and myself too. and more recently I produce music. I have a few releases out on a couple different record labels. If you make music I more than likely like your music more than my own. For real. I'm blessed. I'm burdened. I'm out here fuckin speakers up.
