My favorite track from Chromeo’s latest LP. On the surface it’s an electro-funk, dance floor filler, but underneath is a brilliant love ballad with lyrics that reminded me of something from Tyrone Davis. Dave1 (of Chromeo) told me the song is about a guy who falls in love with a ghost, so I wanted my version to have an eerie, ghostly feel to it. Quincy McCrary played the creepy piano solo at the end.

All the way from a barn-conversion studio in rural Hampshire comes The Widowmaker’s sophomore record, ‘The Wink and The Gun’. 

Due for release in October, ‘The Wink and The Gun’ is a folk, blues and groove-orientated whirlwind of an album, with songs influenced by counterculture and roots music. Written about magical life experiences mixed with the reality and disillusionment that the contemporary world brings, Ian Easton, the man behind The Widowmaker, exhibits blues and Folk influences on a satiric and ironic level, with intricate fingerstyle embellishing colourful prose.   

The Widowmaker retreated to the studio to record the record earlier this year, with the specific aim to capture his songs in the most organic and authentic way possible. ‘The barn has a real organic feel, which I think goes hand in hand with roots, blues and folk music. It just felt right in there; it was big, with lots of gorgeous glassy reverb and big beams and wooden floors,’ says Easton of the barn-conversion studio. ‘We used no studio trickery at all. Some songs were even done live in one take. It was magical at night. I had a wicked time there. It really felt like I was part of making something special.’

Over the past year The Widowmaker has secured appearances at Camp Bestival, Blissfields Festival and Glastonbury Festival, playing before the likes of Seth Lakeman, First Aid Kit, Ed Sheeran and Laura Marling, no less. Those feats are bookended with recently recording the music video for his new single, ‘Tell Me To Stay’ and very recent exposure on BBC Introducing and BBC6 Music as an act to watch out for in 2012. ‘I couldn’t wait to get cracking. I think the songs are better than the first, all round,’ says Easton on recording ‘The Wink and The Gun’. ‘I went through a very rough time personally, halfway through the recording process. Because of that, recording ceased for a month in order for me to adjust. I don’t even know how I recorded some of the songs after that! It was a tough experience, but you know what, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The Wink and The Gun is the single most authentic piece of recording I’ve ever done. I’m really proud of it’

The future certainly looks bright for The Widowmaker, with slots booked at Bestival, Purbeck Folk Festival and Pulse Festival this year where he will be debuting new songs from ‘The Wink and The Gun’.
