Lethal Injection

Premiering releases of established labels is definitely a great responsibility. A challenge that, of course, we feel an enormous pleasure in accomplishing. We have a confession, though: Every time we are requested to review a track of the very first release of a new imprint, we feel something else, a different kind of bond as if we were going to be part of the history of the new project forever. With the kick-off of Spazio Label, things would not be different: We feel truly honoured for having the privilege of reviewing a piece of the Russian platform’s debut release. And what a debut!

Featuring 12-made-with-love cuts, soon available in K-7 and digital formats, the volume one of the VA “Spazio Invasore” showcases the rich sonority of the project by bringing together friends & resident DJs and their respective contributions: Nu Disco, New Beat, Indie Dance, Proto House, Neo Italo, and Modern Disco were brought the party.

The theme we were solicited to present, Bogdan Ra’s “Royal Flush”, is a game-winner. Beautiful arpeggios, melodic guitar riffs, dreamy pads, frolic percussive elements, and a dynamic bassline set the mood of the funkiest theme of the compilation.

Acclaimed, established, rising, and new-coming artists… it doesn’t matter, all are welcome on NEIN Records – if they fit in the good-music-only policy of the British powerhouse, obviously.

Out now on Tronik Youth’s (SXDNS050/TAKEOVER001) imprint, another producer still at the beginning of his endeavours through the music jungle: Hailing from Las Calles, Argentina, Bit Marten had his first tracks published on Maleza in 2020 and 2021 and made his debut on NEIN last year with an Acid-meets-Latinity EP. His brand-new “Mountains & Seas” repeats the formula of its predecessor and showcases the evolution of his sonority which now depicts a higher level of complexity in comparison to his previous works. To prove the point: “First Time” secured a place for Marten on “Nein Ten”, the disputed 10th-anniversary celebratory compilation of the label.

Premiered here, “Powerful Vibes” comes with a naughty and playful aura which invites the audience to the dance floor with a siren-song-like effect. The bouncy bassline sets the tone allied with groovy percussive elements and shards of acid. The speech vocals cannot go unmentioned due to the House-ish vibe it brings to the theme.

Celestino, the curator of the rising and shining platform Sexy Dinosaur From Outer Space, is finally back on Espacio Cielo. After his well-received single "Sehnsucht", released in 2020, his forthcoming EP on the Spanish powerhouse brings two massive originals, inspired by lucid dreams on Robert Johnson's and Panorama Bar's dance floors, and three essential remixes made with love by none other than Bonnie Spacey, Endrik Schroeder, and Parissior, the label boss himself.

“Feel The Love” by Blavatsky & Tolley is coming soon on When Disco Goes Wrong. Old-time ravers, still hot in their game, couldn’t choose a better outlet to host their freshest creation. Curated by Mårten “Mindbender” Attling (BANDCAMP003) and Janne “Högt I Tak” Berglund (SXDNS179), two representatives of the early days of the Swedish underground music scene, the imprint is definitely the place to be for the fans of the good ol’ times out there.

Besides the compelling original, the EP also brings three remixes made with love by the label bosses themselves and a special guest, Adrián Calystarr, for his third appearance on WDGR. The latter, the chosen one to review/premiere.

With well-received pieces published on Golden Soul, Espacio Cielo, and When Disco Goes Wrong itself, the Spanish producer likes darkness mixed with psychedelia, an interesting combination that has drawn attention amid the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene. He repeats the formula, turboing it with shards of Trance, for his version of Blavatsky & Tolley’s single, delivering a deep and progressive interpretation.

Rude Audio (aka Mark Ratcliff) and Dan Wainwright, from South London and North Wales respectively, have paired their creative energies to create Psychedelic Science, an eight track dub excursion with its sights set on the feet and the head and on the home and the club.
Dan and Mark have backgrounds in electronic dance music which has in the past pricked the ears, radio shows and playlists of the likes of Don Letts, Justin Robertson and the much missed Andrew Weatherall.
They are joined on their trip by friends such as the legendary driver of Ken Kesey’s Magic Bus, counter – culture legend Ken Babbs, who at the age of 84 provides a showstopping vocal for a ten minute, psychedelic dub cover of Bowie’s ‘Heroes’.
Elsewhere Dan and Mark find the dub spirit and take it to places new: the sweet bassline led, sci fi splendour of Fire On The Mountain; El Qasr’s off kilter dynamics and bottom end rumble; Talking To The Sun’s heliocentric spaced out sounds, with the spirit of Lord Sabre finding its way in.
There’s no escaping the other influences at work here- mycological and herbal as well as musical. At the end, the pair hit the psychedelic dub motherlode with an eighteen-minute exploration of space and sound in the shape of the epic, chilled, progressive Patience Dub (A Prog Odyssey) which is the sum of the sounds and experiences of Rude Audio and Dan Wainwright, all percolating in one expansive trip.

We were joined by Ken Kesey's right hand man on the Acid Test, Ken Babbs and psychedelic and spiritual guru, Mr Ram Dass, for part of the trip"

Massimiliano Pagliara pays tribute to Manuel Göttsching in his first solo EP on his very own Funnuvojere Records, 'All the VCOs You Can Eat'. 

As a devoted fan of Göttsching's groundbreaking work, Pagliara draws inspiration from his musical hero, crafting a mesmerizing EP that encapsulates the spirit and innovation of Göttsching's influential sound. The release comprises three different interpretations of the same track, each imbued with exceptional artistry and technical knowledge. 

The ceaselessly rolling piano chords in A1 Modulator Mix and B1 Traveler Dub are clear reminders of Göttsching’s E2E4 famous hypnotic refrain. The slight tonal variations, the stretched-out acid line and the uplifting drums conspire to create a sense of transcendence and euphoria. The infectious drums have their own space in B2 The Lonely Drums. This mix has an irresistible groove that will make all dance floors bounce.
