Description:
Whilst on a my daily walk around the neighbourhood, I looked down at my white socks and wondered what sounds would be heard if I slipped my iPhone into my socks and pressed record? My initial thoughts were granular synthesis using my Granie synthesiser. It was very much a case of expecting weird stuff not knowing what sounds it may pick up. Five passages in White Socks: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. All using the sounds from the white socks passed through the Granie granular synthesiser to provide inspiration for performances on Soma hardware synthesisers Lyra 8, Enner and The Pipe. The Soma COSMOS provided the echo chamber that talks to the musician, the musician responds. Both the Lyra 8 and Enner were driven by my human hands, turning dials or activating sensitive touch pads. The Soma Pipe was driven by my human voice. Final multi-track recording by my Granie and FindTheBeat digital software based synthesiser/recording systems. Keeping it human, no AI used here!

Sounds re-imagined,
Lyra 8 interprets.

Echos of granulised sock sounds,
Shifting delays,
Tentative touches of Lyra 8,
Like shifting sands,
The Granular socks come and go,
Washing over Lyra 8.

Tides of granular socks,
Swaying rhythms of the Enner,
Walker journey continues,
Is it bird song,
Or is it Enner speaking?

Tidal remnants of the grains float past,
Walker responds through the Pipe,
Grains answer back,
Ever present steps of the walker,
Stirring the grains.

Granular synthesis in Granie release 6.2 using the new graphical sequencer. The Soma COSMOS played the roles of reverb and taking fragments of sounds from the Lyra 8, Pipe and Enner replaying them in creative ways as directed by the performer. Each of the five passages of a continuity of theme, using the rhythmic choices of the previous passage as a starting point, then changing them. 

Tuning of the granular synthesiser was a simple harmonic series of 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 with the master reference frequency of 6 Hz. Because it was granular synthesis, this 6 Hz was the replay frequency of the grains, length of grains (in milliseconds) was varied. There were up to four voices with their root notes as follows: voice 1 tuned at 6 Hz, voice 2 tuned a perfect fourth a 4/3 ratio at 8 Hz, voice 3 tuned 4 octaves up a ratio of 16/1 at 96 Hz. Occasionally a fourth voice came into play at 0.346 Hz, again tuned in a harmonic series, with the root tuned 4949 cents below the master reference frequency of 6 Hz. The negative 4949 cents (4 octaves and 139 cent), seems like an odd ball tuning, it's root note was tuned by ear, I liked it, so kept it.

The Soma Pipe algorithms used were Orpheus (twin resonant reverberators), Filtera (resonant band pass filter) and Drum #1.
