Two Thousand And Seventeen

Houses in Motion presents their fourth offering from their solo EP series, this time from Adelaide’s own Subjoi. Titled Flashing Lights (HIM004), this curation is a selection of woozy melodic House coated in a Lo-Fi patina. Vocal cuts and driving percussion permeate three original tunes exploring the scope of moods, from deep slow-burners to exploding dance floor starters. The title track edit, ‘Flashing Lights’, punctuates it all with oozing soulful vocal samples and a riff catchy in its simplicity. Here, Subjoi brings together four pieces of ol’ faithful type House joints for club rooms and easy listening alike.

"It was super cool working with Tim," explains Panama. Montreal’s earnest-kitsch-explorer CFCF (aka Mike Silver) has been honing gentle revisions and updates on the outmoded luxuries of pop and new age music for years now. Now he returns with a ‘spiritual sequel’ to his much-loved 2015 ambient opus ’The Colours of Life’, refitted with an eye towards the bygone future: oxygen lounges, chill- out rooms, luminescent spas, and breakbeats. Told in 15 movements, ‘Liquid Colours’ is a 42-minute new age jungle odyssey, perfect for a journey into a dreamworld of pure consumerism. Like all of CFCF’s work, it’s as sincerely and painstakingly composed as it is gently sardonic.

The eyes filter the truth, but at the very end there is not a resolution for his homecoming. Everything is blurred and the night envelopes him as a lullaby.

King Midas Sound have returned!
Reverting to the original duo of Roger Robinson and Kevin Martin, ’Solitude’ is their first release since the Fennesz collaboration ‘Edition1’(Ninja Tune), which dropped in 2015.
Solitude is a meditation on loss. A loss that has been enforced and unexpected. It’s about processing the irrational and incessant feelings of rejection and loneliness, like listening to the tenderness of love disappear and it being replaced by skewed logic. Kevin Martin provides a predominantly beatless musical backdrop, simultaneously minimal and menacing, but periodically extremely beautiful. It stalks the isolated characters created by Robinson’s haunting vocals, as the poet shapes, the protagonists troubled lives into increasingly desolate narratives.
For the artwork, the pair has here collaborated with Japanese contemporary photographer Daisuke Yokota. His mastery of monochrome tone and texture perfectly matches the word/sound power of KMS, mirroring the same obsession with atmosphere, density, and finish.
A soundtrack of pure melancholy which demands total immersion, radiating desolation and dread. The appeal of Solitude is in the oppositional binaries it drives on: technology and emotion, talk and drones, overt and hidden feelings, love and melancholy. Immerse yourself in its mourning.
