We have all listened to a song lyric that somehow mysteriously resonates perfectly with a moment or a feeling we are experiencing. This is the case with Gillian Welch's brilliant Hard Times, a tune with deeper resonance this past summer and into the present! Unlike the hauntingly beautiful and minimalist original, I wanted to create an acoustic band feel with guitars, uke, mando, uke bass and brushes. I asked Saylar Craig, someone I've had the pleasure to share stages and recording sessions with in the past to add some fiddle. However, he came armed with something altogether different. His new eBay purchase, a 'viola d'amore' is a six string instrument with six additional sympathetic strings within the body producing a lovely, warm tone that fills out the arrangement beautifully. Ben Robertaccio helped create that warmth and put all the pieces in just the right place, as usual. Don't let these hard times rule your mind!

This has Third-Culture-Kid written all over it - restless, longing, rootless, wistful....all in a pretty package :) And it features a beautiful solo on a dobro guitar by Gregg Tucker-Kellogg, an American expat Biology Professor!
