.. the sounds of the bards and minstrels were noticed by the local druid who dwelled in this forest .. he followed the echoes and finally found the clearing where the musicians set up their fire and instruments .. he smiled, sat down on a log near the fire and understood that these were grounded nature loving people who wanted to live in peace and harmony .. they told him of their wish to get rid of the bitter selfish hated tyrant ruler of these lands who forbade their music and traditional events.. the druid contemplated for a while and handed them some mysterious potions and elixirs .. he said they may help them to communicate with the mystic spirits of the woods .. maybe these ancient wise entities could help with the troubles of these good people .. they drank from the flasks and started to play again .. at some time the fire went out and even the birds went silent ..

This tune took shape as news spread about UMass retiring the Mount Ida name and embracing the Charles River identity. It felt like a moment worth capturing in a bluegrass frame, because change in New England so often comes with a mixture of memory and hope. The Americana Project brought their easy blend of strings and harmony to it, giving the story the lift it needed. We leaned into the sense of place that still ties alumni, students, and neighbors together, even when a name evolves. The mustang spirit, the hillside history, and the promise of what’s ahead all meet in this song. It’s a tribute to continuity through transition, played with that familiar down-home energy that makes the band such a good fit for stories rooted in community.

UMass Renames Ida (Charles River Campus)

You hear it every day down at the corner coffee shop.  A person comes in and is greeted by a couple of friends with "hey pussycat, what's new?"  Not "what's old and comfortable and well-worn?"  Or "what has been around for awhile, but you've just recently discovered it?"  No, they ask, "what is new?"  I'm as guilty as anyone to sometimes privilege the new over the old, even at my advanced age!  So on this episode of Routes & Branches & Beyond (#390), I have another set of music that is Relatively New and Itching to Be Heard.  If you've joined us before, you know the drill.
