The fact that the mighty St. Germain entrusted long-time friend Atjazz to be the opening act on his comeback album tour – 15 years after his last LP – speaks volumes about the UK house/afro/soul/jazz fusionist’s reputation. Producing since the mid-’90s when he released early material on free party legends Digs & Woosh’s DiY Discs imprint in tandem with scoring music for computer games (the original Tomb Raider, no less), he has had a prolific and hugely varied output. Five full-length albums; remixes for the likes of Nitin Sawnhey, Jazzanova, Bob Sinclar and of course St. Germain; his labels Mantis Recordings and now Atjazz Record Company; a collaborative project Version alongside Charles Webster; his catalogue is burgeoning. It made for ripe pickings for a soulful journey in his Monologues mix, packed with exclusives, classy vocals and the breadth of his styles.

*How would you describe your sound?*

Seriously hip-shaking beats with a very soft centre!

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

I've always been inspired by jazz and Herbie Hancock is my hero. He's never stood still, he's always changed his sound, he's always innovated and his curiosity with technology is the same as mine. I also love Weather Report, anything on ECM and modern hip-hop soul. House music isn't something I listen too; it's something I live and do.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I wanted to create a mix that spanned across a few different times of my life, to show a little of my influences, collaborations and remixes, a tater menu if you will! There are many more better known pieces of work but I wanted to show a little more of "me".

Royalty Of Funk Vol.2 (12" Vinyl Release)

We recon it’s time for a full Junktion EP on Outplay! You can say Wide Awake is an appropriate title after a wonderful 2015 with a string of EP’s on Sleazy Beats, Razor-n-Tape and Rose Records. This four tracker explores the sound he’s been developing over the years and even touches a newer side. The EP opens with the title track “Wide Awake” and embodies the signature Junktion sound with a summery balearic touch. “What We Are” is a faster synth laden affair coupled with his usual sample action. “Sunny Side Up” is what the title says it is, a sunny disco track driven by a groovy bassline and a funky rhythm guitar. The EP closes down with “Don’t Mess Up” for a more contemplative jazzy track with some smooth sampling and afro touches.

Lenny Fontana has been on the house music scene for more than 20 years as a DJ Producer/Remixer and since 2013 Owner of Karmic Power Records. Born and raised in the “Melting Pot” of New York City, which has proven to be a constant creative influence on his fresh sounds, playing a major contribution that led to Lenny's worldwide recognition. His productions have crossed commercially worldwide and some have become classics. He is best known for #11 on UK Pop Chart with Powerhouse feat. Duane Harden “What You Need”, #17 UK Pop Chart Lenny Fontana & DJ Shorty “Chocolate Sensation” and many other chart hits. Lenny has played in the famous Studio 54 NYC, The Shelter, The Underground, Wildpitch, Ministry of Sound, Club Yellow, Club Gold, Club Eleven, Webster Hall, Space Ibiza, Amnesia and many popular clubs around the world. He was the first American DJ to play in Pacha Ibiza and in Dubai.

Now begins Lenny Fontana's career and the birth of his new label Karmic Power Records. In 2013 Lenny teamed up with Salt `N` Pepa's Tour DJ, DJ Dee Wiz on the first single “Music Makes You Wanna” with house remixes from ATFC and DJ PP. Upcoming releases to follow are “Everybody Put Your Hands Up” and “I Don't Want You Back” with remixes from Marshall Jefferson, Samir Maslo, Funkerman, Richard Gray, and Gary Caos. The vision of Karmic Power is to release high quality dance records that can become future dance floor classics.

Lenny Fontana (as the producer) collaborated in 2009-2010 with Jean Claude Ades and together they created the record “Nitetime” with lead vocalist Tyra Juliette. The record was released in the summer of 2010 and went top 10 commercial in Italy, Spain and Germany. Defected records had much success with Lenny Fontana and his productions. In 2006 he released a club classic called “The Way” with lead vocalist Octav'hia Lambertis from C+C Music Factory. Back in 1999 Strictly Rhythm Records licensed Powerhouse feat Duane Harden’ What You Need to Defected / Ministry of Sound which instantaneously hit the Top 15 in the UK Pop Charts and landing at #11 in the UK and various European Pop Charts. The single crossed over into the mainstream MTV U.S. market along with South America culminating in live performances on Top of the Pops, Pepsi Chart Shows in the UK and in all chart shows around Europe. DJ Magazine proclaimed “Powerhouse” was a neck ahead in the annual most hammered tune at the Miami Winter Music Conference. DMA and Mixmag called “What You Need” a must have club anthem.

Episode 84 of the Gangstercast series is brought to us by DJ Genesis. Born and raised in New York City, his passion for music was developed at an early age during the golden age of Hip Hop in the late 80s. By age 13 he had his first pair of turntables and began practicing cuttin n scratchin and mixing. By age 15, he discovered House Music listening to a mixtape graffiti legend “Niceo” was playing in his boombox. Todd Terry’s “Can U Party” was on blast and he was hooked ever since and began to explore House Music more.

By age 38, he purchased Ableton 8 and an Akai MPK 25 and started making house tunes. Legendary DJ and producer Norty Cotto signed his first track dubbed “Come On Over” to Naughty Boy Music and from that point on he’s released tracks on labels like Doin Work Records, Juiced Music, Greenhouse Music, Next Dimension Music and many more. DJ Genesis’s passion for music is as high today as it was when he was a young man hustling mixtapes in high school.

When we sat down with DJ Genesis we asked how he choose the tracks for this mix and he said, “It was tough because there was so much good house music I had to sort through. But I selected tracks that best compliment each other during the course of the mix.”

He went on to explain, "I also threw on 3 IAHG cutz that fit perfect into the mix as well as a classic DJ Sneak & DJ Dan collab (Super Juice) and a exclusive track from Loop Jacker (The Underground Piano) droppin soon on Krome Boulevard Music and from J-Fader (BlackBack [Sample That]).”
