OVERVIEW:
After a series of prized splits and collaborations, M_REC LTD's own Max_M returns with 'Dissertation', his latest fully-fleshed solo effort.

'The Kidnapper Bell' was his last EP for M_REC LTD. The avid vinyl lover and collector has since put his "maximalist" values to work sharing wax with the likes of Fabrizio Lapiana of Attic Music, as well as with newcomers Wrong Assessment. Not one to rush things, 'Dissertation' then comes at a peak time for Max_M and M_REC LTD, representing the culmination of a ceaseless dedication to the type of stolid, hypnotic brand of techno intrinsic to both chief and label.

"Exceeding Brightness" governs the A-side with blue blips set to a progressive chugging pace, enveloped in a trademark background of fuzzy mechanical whirrs. "Architectural Lie" then opens up the B-side with a loop of warm chords that roll into a tumult of diffused hats and jangled melodies. "Scape Sequences" concludes in a subaqueous fashion; viscous, heady and stupefying.

Building on their classical training and many years of jazz practice respectively as pianist and percussionist, Raphaël & Etienne leap into electronica to form Amentia, a Techno-Electronica duo revealing a passion for mesmerizing melodies and old school synths. Almost all the percussions they use are recorded by microphone.

Their originality relies on a bold harmonization of musical scales and universes, a sharp alternance of hypnotic and melancholic sounds exploring both sadness, epic, nostalgic, joy and fantasy. A resolute desire for beauty rooted in their wide musical taste, ranging from jazz and blues to classical music and psychedelic rock.

Guys splitted 90 minutes of their podcast in two parts: «first one is a lunar trip into weird ambient & disco, while the second part fades into an imaginary radio show focused on ultra kitsch music».

Mostly because I wanted to wait until I felt as though I had compiled enough material in this genre to put together a mix that felt fluid and completely encompassing of this period of disco and funk. It’s soulful, funky, and both happy and melancholy at times. As electronic music is starting to draw on these genres more than ever, the mix feels fairly current while also not having a single song in it whose original content was made within the last 20-30 years.
