Canada, similarly to the US, has several cities that are its hip-hop hot spots. While there is not nearly as many, and nor are they nearly as saturated with artists, most music fans can name at least an MC or two from Vancouver, one or two from Montreal, and maybe three or four from Toronto. However, unless you are a Canadian, or are deeply into underground hip hop from the late ‘90s, you are not likely to know that Halifax, Nova Scotia boasts an established scene full of talent.
 
Yep, you guessed it; we’re mentioning all that because ChanHays is a Halifax native who was a part of that scene with his group Something Good in the early ’00s. He eventually left the group with the goal to spread out and work with heads from all over. And that is exactly what he did. On top of working with some of the best MCs Canada’s East coast has churned out (Saukrates, Ghettosocks, TaiChiChi), he went and got all our favorite true school MCs from across the US for his upcoming album, Here. There is so many dope names, we aren’t even going list them, I am just going to hit you with the impressive tracklist below.
 
ChanHays had this to say about the variety of sounds and depth of talent on the project: “I wanted a wide range in the sound to showcase my production. I feel I can do it all. That said, there’s a continuity throughout the tracks and the artists featured. These are artists I’ve been a fan of for years and I think I’ve given them backdrops on which they can really flex.”

Today, Mass Appeal premiered “New Bag,” which features the in-demand duo of the moment, The Cool Kids. If you didn’t know, Chuck Inglish and Sir Michael Rocks dropped their reunion album last Friday and it shot straight to the top of the iTunes Hip-Hop Chart. The Kids play their part and kick lavish raps with as much nonchalance as humanly possible.

HipHopDX Premiere: Ahead of his upcoming debut album, Here, Halifax, Nova Scotia native ChanHays has shared a slice of the album titled “Running,” which features Skyzoo, Elzhi and Uptown XO.

Previously released singles include “New Bag” with The Cool Kids, one of several features on the project. ChanHays addressed the diversity found on his album in the press release.

ChanHays - Thinkin Different f/ Bodega Bamz and Skyzoo

After being a staple in the local scene during the early 2000s, ChanHays (Chandler Haliburton) has recently returned to production under the Droppin’ Science banner. While previously operating under the moniker Focus Aside, Hays co-founded the Halifax Hip Hop group Something Good (with Boy-Ill, Markit, and YRush) and provided all of the production for their early work. With the group, he was able to tour and perform with some of Canada’s top hip hop artists including Classified, K’naan, SonReal, and more.

Chan stepped back from the group to pursue more independent collaborations and worked with several of the region’s top artists including Ghettosocks, Jesse Dangerously, Quake, Rich Aucoin, and others. In 2016, Chan achieved a wider reach for his production as he began connecting with artists across North America. This evolved into a debut full length solo project set for release by DSP in the summer of 2017. While ChanHays will be providing all of the production and also rapping, he will have plenty of company on the project! Heavyweights such as Pharaohe Monch, Masta Ace, Skyzoo, Homeboy Sandman, Torae, RasKass, Cormega, Erick Sermon, Saukrates, Supastition, One Be Lo, Rapper Big Pooh, and more join Chan alongside DSP teammates Ghettosocks, NiLLa, and DJ Uncle Fester. The lofty project is truly unique, and has already been compared to Marco Polo’s seminal 2007 project Port Authority which launched that Canadian producer into the international ranks of top beat makers in the genre.
