Brooklyn veteran spit kicker Shabaam Sahdeeq has returned with his fifth studio album, Keepers Of The Lost Art. The relentless lyricist delivers a body of work that puts his lyrical aptitude at the forefront, while placing an emphasis on top shelf production and cuts, courtesy of Ran Reed, Lewis Parker, DJ Dister, DJ Ready Cee and DJ Skizz, to name a few.

What originally started as 40 tracks, 'Keepers Of The Lost Art' was eventually boiled down to 20, reflecting S-Dub's most comprehensive long play release to date. The LP details his motivation to stay in the game and fight for the culture with bars as tough as the mic in his hand. The production runs the gamut from laid back as exemplified by the nostalgic piano chords on the Lewis Parker produced "Walk with the Light," to electrifying, as demonstrated by the DJ Skizz produced street banger "That Dope," which boasts features from Brooklyn's premiere panderer Wais P, and the lyrically sharp Sha Stimuli. And complain no more club deejays, Shabaam has you covered for a dance friendly cut to spin late Friday nights with the DJ Wonder produced "Fall In Line." It's safe to call it a comeback as his rhymes are as polished today, as they were when he made his Rawkus debut in '97 with "Arabian Nights" B/W "Side 2 Side."

Artistically, the album cover reveals a scenario where Hip-Hop's younger generation discovers the cultural keepsakes of yesteryear. From a solid gold boombox, to jewel crusted crowns, drum machines, and outboard gear, S-Dub is here to confront the generational disconnect, as spelled out on the Eric Rico featured "Grown Man Hustle" -- "Some of these young boys consider me a throwback, I birthed your style you need to give me my flow back," spits S-Dub. When explaining the album cover, Shabaam states: "Imagine the world came to an end in an apocalypse and some kids survived in a bunker. Now when the dust settles and the smoke is gone, the kids come out the bunker and discover a treasure chest in an old music store that contains all the elements of Hip-Hop, and started having fun with it." Whether you see it as a time capsule or the last defense of Hip-Hop's watchmen, Keepers Of The Lost Art could be played ten years ago, today, and ten years from now with high praise.

The last month has been filled with "1st's" for Torii Wolf; premiering her debut solo track, 1st,” with Pitchfork and the corresponding video with Vevo,  announcing her debut solo album, Flow Riiot, (that just happens to be produced by DJ Premier) and now her “1st” remix featuring Dilated Peoples; which was premiered today by Mass Appeal. 

The original version of “1st” found Premier digging into his past catalog and reshuffling the deck on a Rakka Iriscience vocal sample from his “Good As Gone” production which appeared on Dilated Peoples Directors Of Photography album to create another spellbinding scratch-chorus “I’ve seen the last come first, I’ve seen the first last.” With the release of the remix today, “1st” has officially come full circle as Torii and Preemo recruit Evidence and Rakka to officially join them; and with their respective verses and Premier implementing extra punch to the drums and additional piano harmonies—the “1st” (Remix) sounds like an entirely different song.

“I changed the arrangement of Torii's verses and removed the second verse completely” Premier relayed to Mass Appeal.  “I added some extra piano harmonies and it fit on the first attempt. I played all of the sounds; including the piano so there are no samples on the original nor the remix.  Ev and Rakaa sent me 24 bars in total and I split them up into a sixteen and an eight bar set up.   They sounded so good from the original it was a no brainer to get them on the Remix.” 

“When I first laid the song down with Preem we didn't really know where the song would end up" Torii stated.  Preem makes the beat and I express the emotion it evokes inside of me. From there it evolves. Preem is brilliant and he found the perfect line from “Good As Gone” to throw into the mix of the song. I am blown away by what Evidence and Raaka have come up with on this Remix. I love how well they were able to connect with the concept. To feel understood and to hear how other people can unleash a similar emotion (in their own words) and share an understanding of the story is an incredible feeling.” 

Discussing the “1st” (Remix) with Mass Appeal, Ev and Rakaa discuss how Remix discussions began in earnest almost immediately.   “I thought it was dope right off the bat” Evidence shared.  “I kept playing it and really peeped what she was talking about; and felt it even more. Of course I was excited that Preem was cutting our voices up.  I think every rapper secretly wishes that will happen to them.” Rakaa expressed similar sentiments “When I first heard the original, I was kind of shocked because I didn't know we were going to be such an integral part of the song. It's just a line, but Premier put that coal under pressure until it became a diamond. The power and emotion of Tori's voice mixed with a uniquely dope chamber of Boom-Bap created something that is somehow both dark and brilliant--almost haunting. I wanted to be a part of any remix that they were doing immediately, so it was an honor to get the call from my big brother.”
 
“1st” and its accompanying Remix offer just a glimpse at the musical symmetry and bond Torii developed with Premier; a Hip-Hop king who has a habit of contributing and producing historic projects behind the boards. Torii Wolf’s forthcoming debut brings a full clip of moods, range, and vast musical talent. Torii and Premier’s collaborative union bum-rushes the walls of genre, age, and expectations to let the world know there’s a Flow Riiot going on.

After being a staple in the local scene during the early 2000s, ChanHays (Chandler Haliburton) has recently returned to production under the Droppin’ Science banner. While previously operating under the moniker Focus Aside, Hays co-founded the Halifax Hip Hop group Something Good (with Boy-Ill, Markit, and YRush) and provided all of the production for their early work. With the group, he was able to tour and perform with some of Canada’s top hip hop artists including Classified, K’naan, SonReal, and more.

Chan stepped back from the group to pursue more independent collaborations and worked with several of the region’s top artists including Ghettosocks, Jesse Dangerously, Quake, Rich Aucoin, and others. In 2016, Chan achieved a wider reach for his production as he began connecting with artists across North America. This evolved into a debut full length solo project set for release by DSP in the summer of 2017. While ChanHays will be providing all of the production and also rapping, he will have plenty of company on the project! Heavyweights such as Pharaohe Monch, Masta Ace, Skyzoo, Homeboy Sandman, Torae, RasKass, Cormega, Erick Sermon, Saukrates, Supastition, One Be Lo, Rapper Big Pooh, and more join Chan alongside DSP teammates Ghettosocks, NiLLa, and DJ Uncle Fester. The lofty project is truly unique, and has already been compared to Marco Polo’s seminal 2007 project Port Authority which launched that Canadian producer into the international ranks of top beat makers in the genre.
