Chaos in the CBD

Amadeus sees it’s catalog graced yet again by New Zealand outfit Chaos In The CBD. The kiwi brothers, birthed Ben & Louis Helliker-Hales, are no new faces to the label, or the wide variety of genre-bending acronyms they encompass. Having recently relocated from tropical Auckland to damp London earlier this year, the two take their productions along with them in their latest efforts, 816 To Nunhead.

Title track and aside, “816 To Nunhead,” is tinged with what’s left of summer. A nostalgic tune built for the sun and soaked in funk. It’s a track reminiscent of early french disco, almost as if built for the two robots themselves. Guitar plucks and hi hats flow seamlessly throughout the tune, aided by a glorifying vocal, “I would like to think of my music as just an extension, an extension of me of today or whatever.”

What emotion of freedom and escape evoked on the Aside can be contrasted on the flip, “78 To Stanley Bay,” a tune built behind the ever looming theme of loneliness. Accompanied by a live trumpet courtesy of Isaac Aesili, ’78 To Stanley Bay’ tells us a story, or rather a journey, built behind dirty hats and delayed keys. This is a track fashioned for everywhere but the club, and we absolutely love that.

As if it wasn't enough for them to secure the services of French artist Evenn for the 'One For Love EP', the Selections label has done the double on its ninth release and enlisted none other than Detroit's Javonntte to remix the title track. 

The original is almost the definition of deep house - gorgeous strings and pads you could almost drown in, a female vocal eased on by an uplifting piano and silky beats reclining at a moderate but insistent pace. Javonntte's mix keeps the vocals intact but chops and changes a little more beatswise and has its head somewhere a little spacier, both in terms of its Mayday-esque bass end bleeps and celestial pads. Kicking off the B-side, 'Inspiration' is more of a hypnotic, looped up affair, as is the speedier and heavier close to proceedings 'Round N Round', making good use of the filter functions and disco vibes from the past.

February 10th 2023 is the release date of the new EP by Tamati and Paul Bart, called ‘Boogie Me’. The promising duo who are definitely starting their adventure with the right attitude, enters the Apparel Family with a brilliant debut record, which represents the thirty-third release of the now consolidated APDEXTRA. The three tracks featured in ‘Boogie Me’ are three portraits of the artist’s musical talent and bring with them a fresh energy that only a new musical project can have. The first, and title track, is a rhythmic explosion with hints of Acid while the second and third are personal versions of the two artists of the track ‘Still Life’, which the pair personally decline in their own way. The structure of the EP is designed to give the listener all the tools to understand the musical characteristics of the two producer but, even without knowing the title of the tracks or having information on the tracklist, the record is highly enjoyable. The result is a danceable, fresh and carefree EP, perfect for starting the new year on the front foot.

Leeds-based Frenchman Brawther, who is also one-half of Dungeon Meat for more raw grooves, shows off his mastery of deep house on this fresh new EP for B2 Recordings. 'Sundials' (feat Nathan Haines) immediately soothes the soul with its lunging chords and seductive sax lines. Occasional female coos add further lushness to this most heartwarming of tunes. 'Second Nature' has a little more height and drive to it but again the drums are warm and fuzzy, the chords smeared in artful ways and the overall vibe utterly heady. Last of all is the bubbly and dubby 'Gotta Let It Go' with its bottomless depths and chords that melt off into an infinite horizon. Gorgeous stuff from this always quality artist.
