This is the last renovation of several songs I wrote some years back and recorded with Roger Stankovic (https://soundcloud.com/roger-stankovic), who did the lead vocals. Started as a basic piano and vocals track, but I took it down and added some new elements. Very happy with Roger's amazing work on this! Harmonies, moi, and Jen DB.

 “The Greatest Gifts” is a Christmas song about everything you can’t wrap: closeness, kindness, friendship, and the people who make life a little brighter. The project has been in the works since summer. It all began at the end of June, when my good friend Mike Fox and I first talked about the idea. 
The beautiful lyrics were written by Andrea Brennan, and from there it slowly grew into an international collaboration with many wonderful singers, each bringing their own voice, character, and warmth. 

After all, the greatest gifts aren’t the ones under the tree – they’re the smiles, the helping hands, the shared laughter, and the moments that connect us.

This song began as a twinkle in Artur's eye a couple months ago. Hey composed it with his Jaguar, as that is the premium surf guitar out there, and shared it with Tez, who invited the rest of us onto the project. 
   Tez, being the first on the boat, added his thrilling guitar fills and solos first. It was kind of odd the way we did this one, in fact, with the melodic/chordal instruments first, followed by the rhythm section. Mark our production tech expert did some alignment for us right out of the gate, too. That said, JJ was next up to bat, adding his magical electric piano and soaring organ.  
  Ken was first up for the backline, adding his driving drums. Josh then finally added his fretless bass to the stew. But before he was done, Josh also added the guitar solo you hear from 1:30-1:55. 
  After it was all said and done, we asked Tez to mix it for us, as he is a master producer and mixer. 
  This is the latest in a long line of surf rock songs of Artur's we've been fortunate enough to get to play with. Hey is the surfingest Polish fellow you will ever come across, and a wonderful, familiar collaborator with Eclectic Collective. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

[It’s definitely not a Christmas song, but the mood should feel acceptably Christmassy].

A few years ago I tried setting this text to music; it’s very well known here among students because it is considered one of the earliest attestations of the Italian language. Discovered on an inner leaf of a liturgical codex preserved in Verona, it was written between the 8th and 9th centuries by an anonymous hand. It is regarded as a “riddle” (see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veronese_Riddle), generating an enormous amount of scholarship. 
To me, its musicality is evident. 

Compared to the version I recorded in 2018 (I had posted it on YouTube, where it still is), based on the Washburn and the sounds of my old Yamaha, I added some VSTs and re-equalized the vocals. Back then, multiplying the vocal tracks was the most fun part, in order to obtain a choral effect. What came out is what I would call a “false traditional folk song".

This song began its life when Chris came up with it a while back, latest of the massive song collection he laid on Eclectic Collective about a month and a half ago. Be prepared to hear a lot more of his songs coming through our fingers and voices, because we now have a plethora of great material from him. So, Chris came up with this arrangement on his acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and synth, but it was a pretty solid composition, even by his standards, and it had the magic already baked in.
The first one of us to grab a hold of it was Carl, who immediately heard his vocal part, which he supplied with his always striking lyrics. JJ was the first instrumentalist to add his part, laying in the delightful organ, electric piano, and synth you hear throughout. Josh came out swinging next, adding his upright bass, which he bowed. Mark came along shortly after, adding his dramatic timpani, melodic steel pan, some triangle, arpeggiated synth, and synth effects. He also did some major editing, creating a middle section for Stephen's guitar solo, and tightening up the ending. Mark also added some backing vocals during the solo, quoting a phrase from George Harrison's 'Here Comes the Sun', among a few other subtle Easter Eggs from that song sprinkled throughout,  if you listen closely!
At this point, the song sounded almost classical, especially Josh's bowed bass part. However, Ken still had something to say in here, adding his remarkable, driving drums to the whole thing. Josh, recognizing the sea change this created, added his fretless four-string to match Ken's kick. Stephen was able to blend the two in the production phase. But not before installing his absolutely thrilling electric guitar solo in there. Stephen did a wonderful job of producing, mixing, and mastering this for us, as always, when it was all in the can.
This is the first song Carl has gotten to sing that Chris has written. We're all super excited to unleash this combo on the world. This song reminds Josh of one of his favourite bands, The Flaming Lips, which makes it a special treat for him, as well. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.
