A true pioneer of the Drum and Bass sound, Gridlok remains one of the most highly regarded artists in the industry. With a discography spanning over a two decades and featuring classics such as ‘Moodswings’, ‘Bottomfeeder’, and ‘Standing Room Only’, it’s little wonder that the Gridlok name has become synonymous with timeless Drum and Bass.

Involved with music from an early age, Ryan Powell aka Gridlok picked up a variety of instruments, but it was after experimenting with a cheap radio shack microphone paired with a 4-track tape recorder that he soon found himself in the murky world of production. Now with the use of a computer and an E-mu sampler along with an ever-changing combination of analogue gear and production techniques, this West Coast producer has led by example, constantly exploring new ways of injecting emotion and attitude into his art. 

The grimy uncompromising style that Gridlok has developed forms the foundation for his glittering career, gaining him the attention of his peers with household names such as Shy FX, Pendulum, and Dom and Roland lining up to work with the American producer. Acknowledged by artists in and out of Drum and Bass, Gridlok has put his spin on other genres, remixing for the likes of electronica giant Josh Wink and house legend Sasha. Gridlok’s original music and remixes have also branched into other media, with his work appearing in titles such as Konami’s Dance Dance Revolution and MTV’s Challenge series. Covering a wide spectrum within Drum and Bass, Gridlok’s versatile production has allowed him to release on a diverse range of labels, spanning from Ram Records and Playaz to Commercial Suicide and Moving Shadow, whilst maintaining his signature sound....

 Where do i start...

Iv always had a love for all different kinds of music from Rap to Hip Hop, R&B, Reggae, Bashment, Jungle to Drum and Bass and a whole load more.

My real passion and love has to go to Drum and Bass for me there i no other music like it.

I started out in the underground Drum and Bass scene where i met loads of different artists and people involved in the music industry from there my journey fully started.

World-class DJ, producer, radio titan, and celebrated author – DJ Semtex wears many hats. To fans, he is a trusted authority, to peers, he is a creative force advancing the culture. Semtex is one of the UK’s most influential tastemakers. With a career spanning over two decades, he has consistently championed artists and driven the conversation around the genre.

He first cut his teeth as a DJ in his hometown, Manchester. In the years since, he has become one of the premier DJs in hip hop, touring, opening, and performing onstage with the likes of Travis Scott, Dave, D Block Europe, Skepta, French Montana, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Rick Ross, Migos, Lancey Foux, and Dizzee Rascal.

His Friday night show on Capital Xtra is a vital platform for emerging and established artists, offering them a space to showcase their talent and connect with a wider audience. Before Capital Xtra, Semtex spent 15 years at BBC 1Xtra, shaping the landscape of hip-hop radio. He also extended his influence digitally, hosting Spotify’s Who We Be Talks_, where he sat down with some of the biggest names in the industry. Anchored by an impulse to share Hip-Hop’s story, as a radio personality he is known to coax unusual realness out of closed-off megastars like Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Central Cee, Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Eminem.

In 2016, he released the Hip Hop Raised Me book, a critically acclaimed deep dive into the genre’s history, featuring exclusive interviews and personal insights. Now, with his Seminal Sound label, Semtex continues to push boundaries, ensuring that hip-hop remains at the forefront of culture while giving new voices the recognition they deserve.
