Why do we tell stories?

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs.

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human.

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun.

With The Quest, Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists across the world to bring these themes to life.

NHAR (My Favorite Robot, Correspondant) is a consummate storyteller, and he opens the book with the glistening space tech of 'Navigli'. This is quickly followed up by newcomer Dan Grassler, whose superb 'Going Back' with US vocalist KnowKontrol is powerfully brooding and promises great things for the Munich-based producer.

The momentum picks up further with the standout 'Over My Head', a dark and delicious cut from two returning Chapter 24 artists, Alex Zed and Billie Fountain.

The label welcomes Teho and Machino for their inaugural releases on the imprint. Frenchman Teho (Herzblut, Parquet) serves up a double helping of delight with the skilfully crafted 'Back To The Forest' and the tense tech house of 'Drunken Leads'. Meanwhile, Machino (Desert Hearts), one of a new wave of Tijuana-based producers, showcases his unique blend of potent techno and ambient influences on 'Perdidos'.

Finally, Melodule and Van Did bring the tales to a close with 'Téou 12', a dreamy, abstract piece that showcases wonky basslines, drifting pads and engaging sound design.

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories. 

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase "Once upon a time...", let yourself be carried away…

The 28th Chapter sees Djuma Soundsystem team up with Westerby for our latest story in sound: the cosmic afro tech of ‘Disambigua’.

Now based in Copenhagen, Norwegian artist Djuma Soundsystem was catapulted into the public's consciousness over a decade ago with his club classic 'Les Djinns' on Get Physical Music. His organic, sample-heavy signature sound is the perfect combination with fellow Copenhagen artist Westerby’s rougher, analogue synths and techy edges.

‘Disambigua’, their much-anticipated follow up to smash hit ‘Koma Kobache’ (Get Physical), is a standout cut which is already turning heads on dancefloors across Europe with its dark groove and killer vocal hook.

Rising star Jonathan Kaspar (Objektivity, Pets Recordings) is first up on the Editions, where he takes things deep. Built around the interplay of synth lines in call and response, his rework is a pure bass monster.

Meanwhile, label regular KatrinKa marks her latest release on Chapter 24 with an Edition that places the emphasis on a trademark infectious groove, paired with a spiritual melodic motif; a perfect balance of darkness and light.

The package is rounded out by Aaaron. The in-demand producer has worked with everyone from Defected and Get Physical to (more recently) Connected and Yoshitoshi. He focuses on deep, powerful drums in a version heavy on tension.

With this latest Chapter there can be no doubt: four different flavours of ‘Disambigua’ which together add up to a clear and coherent whole.

Long term relationships are a lovely thing and this is what we've got with Manuel Moreno! A regular contributor to the Hive Audio catalogue from early on the Swiss producer is now teaming with Natasha Waters for his newest musical outing the Ghost EP.Presenting a deep, damp and slightly fever'ish musical vision for the very heat of the night the pairing creates a wonderful, ever rolling tune with the original version of Ghost, perfectly amalgamating stripped down TechHouse garnished with spatial FX and haunting sounds and Natasha Waters' captivating, highly seductive vocals - a combination meant to turn this outstanding track into a long lasting future classic immediately.With Definition on remix duties for Ghost we see a very careful and masterly crafted rework here, sticking close to the mysterious vibe of the original cut, adding a little more punch here and there plus introducing a new organic synth bassline and tense string layers as well as a new approach to the vocal arrangements this one is perfect for grooving late night sessions.Finally the 'Kaltehand Remix' of Ghost lifts crowds to heavenly levels with a new, uplifting arrangement weighing in panoramic strings and pads, a well-floating bass foundation and crystalline, (Neo)Trance-reminiscing melodies accompanied by all embracing synth warps and, of course, Natasha Waters' beautiful vocal performance in all its glory.

LA based DJ and producer Sam Jaspersohn debuts on Monog with a top-notch remix on Reborn. Sam was exposed to electronic music when he was 15 and he began to mix with vinyl since then. His career soon blossomed with a coast-to-coast following. He has received praise for tracks like Islands which featured on Digweed’s Bedrock 18-Signals compilation in 2016. His works have also been championed by a host of other top artists and he has appeared on top labels around the world. On the remix Sam takes us down the rabbit hole with a wondrous display of musical composition made up of deep, dark and lush tones. A solid drum section sets up a smooth rhythm while mesmerizing pads and sub shaking basses go to work. Mary’s vocal rings true throughout adding a beautiful organic flavour. An excellent track that is not to be missed.

Following on from the success of last year’s ​Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun​, Bedouin are back on Crosstown with two original and evocative creations.

“‘Wastelands’ is a special one for us that carries a message about the journey of humanity. ‘Flamma’, was made with the dance floor in mind using live percussive elements with a Hurdy-gurdy lead played by Guilhem Desq who flew from Toulouse to London to record last winter.”- Bedouin 

Wastelands sets the precedence for the EP with its melancholic ambience and poignant lyrics delivered from one half of the duo Rami. Flamma adopts heavier instrumental sections that create an eerie atmosphere with a pensive and dramatic build up. 

Brooklyn-based nomads Tamer Malki and Rami Abousabe together form the DJ and production partnership of Bedouin. ​Since its incarnation, they’ve achieved notable success, with Mixmag naming them their number one Breakthrough Act of 2017. In the same year they launched their hugely successful residency, Saga, at Ibiza’s Heart. They’ve brought their distinct sound to a number of hot labels including Get Physical, Supernature, Cityfox, Kindisch and All Day I Dream. With their diverse musical influences clear in their productions, Bedouin look set to open up their sound to all the far-flung corners of the world.
