Another live set I've been working on. It's basically a 20-minute rhapsody that I wrote via sequencer.

Gear:
- Squarp Pyramid - the main sequencer in the center. The buttons I'm pressing on the Pyramid toggle individual patterns of 1-2 instruments each with a short (usually 4 to 8 bar) riff. I really like my Pyramid as it allows for fun ways to perform live sequencing. There are 16 patterns (white buttons) x 4 banks, totaling 64 different patterns, which basically allows me to write 4 to 5 songs per project file and play them seamlessly.

- Maschine+ - mostly as a synth and drum machine, far left. I'm aware that it is also capable of sequencing, but it's kind of weak. Time signatures are limited to even numbers (e.g. 2/4, 4/4, etc.), so you can't do fun stuff like 5/4. You can do triplets, but it's kind of a dumb workaround imo. Also, I really hate the menu diving with respect to sequencing.

- Roland JX-08 - love this little boutique synth I recently got, far right. It's multitimbral (2 synths via 2 MIDI channels) and polyphonic, and really fun to mess with the faders and switches live. It's responsible for a lot of the retro sounds.

- Arturia Minibrute 2 - not shown in this video because it's right under the camera, but I primarily use it as a bass since it's monophonic.

Multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer Peter Broderick will release a new extended player titled 'Two Balloons' on November 9th with Erased Tapes. Available as a limited edition 10” vinyl and digital download, it features the score for the award-winning animation of the same name, inspired by an early recording of his, plus a 9-minute electronic rework on the B-side titled Techno For Lemurs.

Fairly often we see albums of “Music inspired by the film __”, but less common is a film inspired by music. Such is the case with Two Balloons. Director Mark C. Smith got the idea for his nine-minute stop frame animation film while out at sea, looking at a majestic funnel cloud in the distance. Shortly after he heard a song by Peter Broderick from one of his earliest recordings — 4 Track Songs — and the music struck a chord so strongly, he knew he wanted to make a film to fit the melody. And so began the five-year labour of love that would eventually produce this enchanting little film, currently circulating film festivals around the world and racking up countless awards and accolades including ‘Best Original Music Score’ at the New Renaissance Film Festival in Amsterdam.

Exactly one year after Lorenz’s debut EP on Dirt Crew he is back with a super funky follow up. With the recent “Marakuja” track on our “Deep Love 2018” compilation he already set the tone to a much more fluid and organic live approach to his sound recording.

The opening title track “Belair” is a heavy “wurly” organ jam he developed mainly by playing live and afterwards finalizing it in his Cologne studio. After his recent tour and shows as part of the Detroit Swindle live outfit he really got into improvising and composing his tunes on the fly. The Funk is all over this one and it is a great uplifting “sunny” jam to play out. Following this one is the slower and deeper “Jubilee” that’s adding even more soul to the “Rhode” funk with an irresistible bass line and melody and when the clavinet break sets in it’s nothing but Good Times on the dance floor! A certain rewind for us and favorite track off this new EP.

On the flip we added two remixes from his previous high in demand tracks “On Top” and “And I Said”. Lorenz has been working a lot on various projects with his good friends Strip Steve and Tensnake and both had their go on these tracks from last year. Strip Steve took the parts of “On Top” and turned them into a deep Detroit flavored House Jam with stabby beats and beautiful strings added. Last but not least Tensnake fires up a high octane remix of “And I Said” that leans much towards old school New York house rhythms and the additional “Sax” topping gives it a groovy 90s feel to it. For sure bringing back that great happy and funky flow of the original.

when I was trying to finish this project, I had a bunch of friends I randomly texted asking them for sounds. I was like "yo, can u record yourself on your phone, I don't care what u do, you can fart on your phone with your voice recorder, I'll make it work." 
luckily they were down and many of them sent me an array of dope stuff, from Javi turning on his vacuum cleaner to Nick brushing his teeth, and everything in between. It's dope because it feels like in a way they were there with me helping me finish the project. It feels like their spirit is intertwined in the music, and it makes me remember the friendships that I've been blessed to cultivate over the years. Thank you all for sharing with me your sounds. Thanks for reading this essay I wrote, I hope some of it resonates, and helps remind you to make time for the therapy in your life. hope ya'll enjoy the project.
