The Hollow Heart

88, the number of keys on a piano, has a rare property that you can read about here https://oeis.org/A316221, but the equation in the title is the gist of it.  So, how to make this simple fact audible?  The work comprises 40144896 sets of 7 variations of which here find a selection of 20.  Each one divides the keyboard and sequences of 88 beats into segments of size 44,22,11,8,2,1 (these divisors of 88 add up to 88), ordered somehow, and this produces melodic material that keeps one pianist busy.  The other pianist plays ostinati that explain for the ear that these numbers indeed divide 88.  That's the concept...but the details matter...and also sorts of strange nuances to hear  emerge even after one "has the idea."   But it all goes by fast, so even gleaning the idea requires gaining a knack.

This was my first ever experience playing with an orchestra, and wanted to share what was recorded on that day
