”What Good Shall I Do This Day?” Every morning Benjamin Franklin asked himself this simple question, as a virtuous routine. I found this quote while reading on the daily habits of great men and after I had started to compose the piece already. I instantly felt that this sentence would make a perfect title. The vision I had first was a joyous piece, full of benevolent energy and the kind of mood you feel when you wake up well rested, have a nice breakfast and begin your day with enthusiasm, deciding what you aim to achieve by the end of the day. 

Everyone can make this question one’s own. I believe it is fundamentally universal. Not only was Benjamin Franklin one of the Founding Fathers of the U.S.A. but also a man who constantly wanted and worked to improve himself. In other words, he can be an inspiration for us all to try to become better individuals and to accomplish great things. One step after another, making a difference thanks to constant effort, with courage and patience.

The music of the piece isn’t programmatic in nature. There are three united movements, almost permanently driven by a vigorous rhythmic pulse. The piece begins with a dynamic, lively mood, and then moves to a shining theme both fanfare-like and swinging. The music ends with a joyful dancing pace before it concludes triumphantly.

Cette pièce a été inspirée par la lecture du livre du philosophe américain Michael Lynch, duquel j’ai emprunté le titre.

A une époque où les émotions sont considérées quasiment comme une valeur absolue, où parfois l’expression de celles-ci se déchaîne sur les réseaux sociaux, j’ai trouvé que rappeler la valeur de la raison prenait tout son sens. La raison est une faculté humaine universelle, et qui a vocation à nous rassembler, qui nous permet de rechercher la vérité, et de nous mettre d’accord. L’esprit des lumières est également convoqué, ainsi que la capacité de la raison à clarifier les pensées, à sa capacité de discernement des émotions, à trouver l’ordre à partir du chaos. L’idée maîtresse de clarification progressive traverse la pièce, à travers différentes formes. Au-dessus de formes mouvantes culmine une énergie lumineuse, et après un apogée sonnant comme une célébration s’ensuit un mouvement rapide, empreint d’une humeur joyeuse : la joie de comprendre, la joie du partage, la joie du rationnel.

Le cœur de l’inspiration de cette composition se trouve dans une sorte de proverbe aux origines indéterminées : « Tourne-toi vers le soleil, et l’ombre sera derrière toi ». Depuis quelques années, je suis passionné par les sujets artistiques reposant sur des émotions positives, sur des états mentaux enthousiastes ou paisibles, d’une dynamique enjouée ou rayonnante. Ce concerto pour cor est une nouvelle fois la manifestation de cette passion. La morale de ce proverbe est puissante, et d’une vérité irréfutable. J’aime sa force motivante. Cette pièce se veut une traduction musicale de cette idée.

Cette pièce poursuit une forme de cheminement, de l’ombre vers la lumière, de la lourdeur vers la légèreté, en trois mouvements d’un seul tenant. Le premier mouvement touche à l’obscur et au chaos, des masses écrasantes alternent avec des expressions désordonnées, à l’image de pensées dispersées, désorientées. Le cor émerge, dans une individualité fragile, plaintive, hésitante. Le deuxième mouvement se poursuit dans cette expression, mais avec un esprit commençant à s’affirmer dans une forme de solidité. La plainte fait place à la résolution, ce qui était chaotique devient un dépassement du tragique. Après une transition adoucissant le discours vient le dernier mouvement, rapide, une véritable libération, l’expérience apaisante et énergisante de la lumière. Le cor, surmontant définitivement ce passé pénible, dialogue avec l’orchestre dans une clarté frémissante de vitalité.

To the future, or to the past, to a time when thought is free, when men are different from one another and do not live alone - to a time when truth exists and what is done cannot be undone: From the age of uniformity, from the age of solitude, from the age of Big Brother, from the age of doublethink - greetings!

If the Party could trust its hand into the past and say of this or that event, it never happened - that, surely, was more terrifying that mere torture and death.

2. Winston and Julia

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.

Julia : I love you.

Winston : What is your name?
Julia : Julia. I know yours: It's Winston, Winston Smith.
W. : I hated the sight of you, I wanted to rape you and then murder you afterwards. You are very young, you are ten or fifteen years younger than I am. What could you see to attract you in a man like me?
J. : It was something in your face, I thought I'd take a chance. I'm good at spotting people who don't belong. As soon as I saw you, I knew you were against them.
W. : Listen, the more the men you've had, the more I love you. Do you understand that?
J. : Yes, perfectly.
W. : I hate purity, I hate goodness, I don't want any virtue to exist anywhere, I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones. You like doing this? I don't mean simply me, I mean the thing in itself?
J. : I adore it.

3. The Betrayal. Victory of Big Brother.

O'Brien : Don't worry Winston; you are in my keeping. For seven years I have watched over you. Now the turning point has come. I shall save you, I shall make you perfect... I am taking trouble with you, Winston, because you are worth trouble. You know perfectly what is the matter with you. You are mentally deranged.


O'Brien : How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?
Winston : By making him suffer.

Présence

Charles van Hemelryck (b. 1981) began his superior musical studies in Paris while studying philosophy at the same time at the Sorbonne. Then he graduated in composition from the National Superior Conservatory of Music and Dance of Lyon (CNSMDL), and obtained a Master’s degree in Music Pedagogy. During his curriculum he benefitted from an Erasmus scholarship to study at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Charles van Hemelryck’s work focuses on the genres of orchestral, chamber, choral, vocal and solo instrumental music. His music has been performed in France, Finland, Canada, Poland, Iceland and the Netherlands. In 2015 he received a grant from the Société Générale Musical Sponsorship. His piece Présence for mixed choir, written on a poem by Georges-Emmanuel Clancier, was awarded a 3rd prize in 2018 at the VocalEspoo Festival (Finland) Composition Competition. The same year he received a grant from the Beaumarchais Society (S.A.C.D.) for the lyrical project Mer de tous les maux. In 2019 his piece A Cradle Song reached the final at the Composition Competition for mixed choir from Hendrix College (U.S.), and his piece Présence was awarded an honorable mention at the RED NOTE New Music Festival Composition Competition (U.S.).

Charles van Hemelryck draws his inspiration from poetry, philosophical ideas, and nature. The goals of his music are to meditate on the world, to make a thought perceptible and to move people so as to initiate reflection. His first works are mainly inspired by the conflicts of the human soul. More specifically, his string quartet Citizen of the Universe raises the question of the spiritual quest for freedom and happiness in spite of the obstacles of fear and violence.

In 2019 he successfully passed the examination of Artistic Teaching Territorial Professor. He has taught harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, composition and analysis at the Valence Romans Agglo Conservatory until 2023 and has taught orchestration and anthropology of music at the University of Burgundy-Europe in 2022-2023. He currently teaches at the Pays de Montbéliard's Conservatory and at the Ecole Supérieure de Musique de Bourgogne Franche-Comté.
