Two decades beyond the terrible events of September 11, 2001, there is importance in remembering and honoring those who lost their lives in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington DC. Gary Goldman organized the first 9/11 Memorial Motorcycle Ride as a companion to a 9/11 Walk over the Ravenel Bridge. Since then, the ride has grown to its own event, held this year on Sunday, Sept. 14. Goldman discusses his motivation for the ride, provides details on the event, and talks of the parts of the community that have joined forces to make the ride successful.  Whie this police-escorted ride is free for participants; the event does raise money which is donated to area veterans in need.

This September, the City of Goose Creek will open the Joseph S. Danning Amphitheater. The 1200 seat facility will host concerts, movie nights, events and even be available for rental. Lyza Bowers, the Program Director for the City of Goose Creek explained the process of how the amphitheater came to be, who Joseph S. Danning is and why the facility is named after him. Both she and Marketing Director Adam Kelly described the facility, talked about the on-site amenities and Adam talked about the first 3 events. Bowers also provided information on how residents can rent the facility and the positive economic impact for the City of Goose Creek.

The 55th annual James Island Yacht Club King Mackerel and Inshore Fishing Tournament is set for Saturday, July 26th. This year’s tournament is a benefit for Pickle’s People. RJ McHugh, the tournament director, shared the details of this year’s event as well as how local fisherman could enter to win cash prizes, and assist this year’s charity. Each year the tournament raises money for a designated charity, with this year’s recipient Pickle’s People. Zach Volousky is a Yacht Club member, and the founder of Pickle’s People, a non-profit created following his daughter’s leukemia diagnosis. The charity assists families who have a child that is a patient at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Volousky explained the specific ways Pickle’s People provides assistance and the impact that money the tournament raises will have.

SEGMENT #2: GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston

GiGi's Playhouse is a national non-profit with more than 60 locations nationwide. Recently, a 62nd location was opened in North Charleston to provide programming and support for individuals with Down syndrome & their families. Marie Myers is the Board President for GiGi’s Playhouse Charleston and shared the story behind the creation of GiGi’s Playhouse. Myers talked about the biggest misconception that people have about individuals with Down’s Syndrome and how they are assisted. She also spoke about what the goal is for GiGi’s Playhouse and how a father or mother could begin working with the playhouse. The organization has their first Charleston fundraise in July and Myers share the details on their “I Have a Voice” Gala.

Hurricane season is underway, a time for preparation across the Lowcountry. To get listeners ready, Meteorologist Jeb Kristoff with WCBD-TV talked about the predictions for this year’s Atlantic Hurricane season, which runs through November 1. Kristoff broke down the various terms surrounding the storms, providing the difference between a Tropical Depression, Storm and the 5 levels of a Hurricane. He also shared the difference between what a watch is what a warning is. In addition, the meteorologist gave some specific things that Lowcountry residents should be doing now to make certain they are prepared when a major storm is approaching. Kristoff also let us in on what happens behind the scenes as a storm approaches, and their strategy to keep viewers in the know.

SEGMENT #2: MeowDog Animal Rescue

There’s a new animal rescue nonprofit in Mount Pleasant. MeowDog is the new organization, which is a partnership with Lucy Beckham High School. Alex Mccarrell is the founder/director of MeowDog and a teacher at Beckham High. She has been able to coordinate the non-profit work with the veterinary program at the high school and incorporate the students into roles at MeowDog. Mccarrell shared how a student came up with the name, and how the school has worked with MeowDog to become a drop off location for donations. She gave insight into the animals they been able to help and the importance of fostering. Reynolds Lee, the President of Beckman Vets club joined the conversation to share how MeowDog has been a positive for both him personally and the school as a whole.

Each summer, South Carolina’s Premiere, and largest, flower show is held at Exchange Park in Ladson. This year, “Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places” is the theme of the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston’s event on August 2nd and 3rd. Trish Bender is a Council of Garden Club member and explained that the organization is a non-profit that helps to beautify the Lowcountry through a number of programs. It has 19 local chapters and has worked with the Exchange Club on this show for the better part of 50 years. Bender provided specific details on the two days the show is open to the public, as well as describing the competition part of the show, which occurs two days prior to the public portion of the show.

Approximately 10 years ago, then radio personality, now City of North Charleston Ombudsman Edwin Wright was asked to assist in dealing with a truancy problem.  He created the “Cool to be in School” program which continues today.  Saturday, August 9th, with the assistance of the North Charleston Police Department, the annual “Cool to be in School” Supply Drive will take place.  The event will provide not only school supplies, but haircuts and other necessary back-to-school elements for those in need. Associate Chief of Police Angela Johnson and Captain Terika Wright spoke of the department’s role in the drive and provided specifics on the event.  The pair also shared information on CAPS, the department’s athletic program for youths in need in North Charleston.

SEGMENT #2: We Are Sharing Hope, SC

Only a small number of those who are eligible to donate an organ actually sign-up to do so in South Carolina. We Are Sharing Hope SC is a non-profit organization educating area residents on the importance of being an organ donor. Krystal Cau, Director of Communications for We Are Sharing Hope SC provided some background on organ donation and went through the steps as to how someone could become a donor. Cau also spoke on how the non-profit works with the community, and one of the ways is hosting an health fair. Their 4th annual free event is set for Saturday, Aug.9. The director shared the services they would be providing, along with the other free activities available as part of the event.

SEGMENT #1: Charleston Symphony Orchestra League

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League is the fundraising arm of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. The CSOL is introducing a new event, “Arts Serenade” on Saturday, August 16th. President Gail Corvette explained the purpose of the CSOL and how the organization works. Sophia Perlee, a CSOL Board member provided the information on the “Arts Serenade” which is an afternoon of live performances with interactive experiences celebrating the Lowcountry Arts Community. Arts Serenade pairs live art performances with live music performances. The goal of Arts Serenade is to introduce attendees to parts of the arts they otherwise may not experience. Corvette added how they fundraise and how the monies raised will help the non-profit and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

SEGMENT #2: Jean’s Angels

Ten years ago, Katrina Carpenter lost her mother Jean. Out of that tragedy, she was inspired, in her mother’s honor, to create Jean’s Angels. Originally the nonprofit was created to assist children who lose a parent or parents. As the nonprofit grew, it expanded the services they offered. Carpenter shared how she felt after losing her mom and how that emptiness was turned into helping others in the same situation. As Jean’s Angels celebrates a decade of service to the Lowcountry, their biggest area of growth has been in assisting the homeless. Carpenter is most excited by their newest addition, a trailer that brings portable showers to the homeless community. She also shared how people could help Jean’s Angels, not only monetarily but through item donation and volunteering.

He created this free event and involved local police and fire departments so the ride would be police escorted as it moves through the Lowcountry. In addition to the ride, the event begins with a pre-ride breakfast and ends with an after-ride party that features speeches from local political leaders and a New York City fireman.

A donation of blood is known as giving the gift of life. There is a constant need of donors to keep up with the need. The American Red Cross is the largest supplier of bloods to local hospitals. The Executive Director of the Lowcountry American Red Cross, Megan Silsby talked about the status of the blood supply, as donations generally drop during the summer months. She provided the number in terms of how much blood they need to collect daily and the surprising figures of the relatively small percent of the eligible population that donates. To assist in potentially raising that percentage, Silsby explained the blood donation process, how the Red Cross works to make the experience easy, and how a donor can track their donation to ultimate learn how their blood was used.

When their son Bohdi was just 3 years old, he was diagnosed with cancer. At that time, Jen and Josh McConnell did research and discovered the best place to have their child treated was in their hometown, at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. After he was cured, the couple created the McConnell Foundation, a non-profit designed specifically to fund pediatric cancer research at the hospital. This year, their biggest fundraising event is the 4th annual Shining Star Gala on Saturday, September 20th. Jen and Josh shared how and why they created this event and what attendees can expect if they attend the Gala at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms. They also discussed the importance of the research being done locally and why funding the research is so critical.

SEGMENT #1: MUSC Hollings Cancer Center

The first Saturday in November, hundreds of riders jump on their bicycles and ride to help win the fight against cancer. The event is Lowvelo, a benefit ride for the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Chris Winn is the Director of Lowvelo who explained how the name of the event was created, and what the overall point of the event is. Lowvelo is not just one ride, but a series of four rides, each a different distance, including an 80-mile course. Riders collect pledges with 100% of the rider money going directly to fund cancer research at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Winn spoke of the work being funded at the cancer center thanks to the event, which has a $1 million dollar goal this year.

SEGMENT #2: Carolina Children’s Charity

Since 1987, Carolina Children’s Charity has been assisting Lowcountry children and their families. Sonya Beale is the Executive Director of the non-profit, and is about to celebrate 20 years with the Charity. Beale explained how the Charity helps children with birth defects and childhood disease and the steps a Lowcountry family needs to take to receive assistance. Additionally, she shared stories of the more than 4,000 children they have helped, and talked about way, beyond donating money, how individuals can assist Carolina Children’s Charity. The organization has a long relationship with area fire departments and Beale discussed how that came about and its importance today. Plus, she provided the details on their next fundraiser, the 22nd annual Care, Give, Run on Sept. 27, a family friendly 5K event.

For the 14th year, the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Mount Pleasant Business and Community Expo on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Omar Shrine Center at Patriot’s Point. Rebecca Imholtz is the organization’s Executive Director and explained why the Chamber was motivated to hold the Expo and how the event has grown over the last decade. She shared the purpose of the expo, discussed how this event assisted both the town, businesses in the local area and residents, while sharing the new elements of this year’s event, including their first ever job expo. Along with a list of sponsors of the Expo, Imholtz provided a timeline for the event and spoke about how the event, and the Chamber as well, is not just an organization for business, but is also a huge positive for residents of Mount Pleasant as well.

Tony Deering, the CEO of R2P Innovations explained what his company’s name stands for and how we came to create the company. Deering shared exactly how the doors they make work and the testing that’s been done on them and the safety difference the doors make for students, teachers and first-responders. In addition, Deering discussed how the company came to be founded in Ladson and the impact that it has had, to this point, on the Lowcountry economy.
