The public library is for much more than reading magazines and checking out books. This summer, the Charleston County Public Library is expanding programs to be outreach within the community. Kathleen Montgomery, Associate Director of Community Engagement with the Charleston County Library introduced their Summer Feeding Program, a joint venture with Charleston County School District and the Lowcountry Food Bank to provide lunch for 5 through 18 years old. The program will run through August 10th at the various library branches. Montgomery also provided information on their Summer Reading Program, available to both students and adults. Plus, she laid out the many reasons why libraries are still important and relevant here in the 21st century.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry is an organization that changes children’s lives. The nonprofit’s CEO CJ Gathers explained the different ways they are able to do that. In working with “little” (children) and teaming them with the correct “big” (adults), they’re able to provide much needed mentorships for hundreds of Lowcountry children. With school out for summer, Gathers discussed how that affected the program. She also shared the guidelines as to how a “little” gets into the program and how “bigs” are screened and the process of making a match between the right two. This summer, the organization is hosting a golf cart raffle to raise much needed funds, and Gathers provided details on the BIG Golf Cart raffle, how individuals could get tickets and how the money will help.

Sometimes a tragedy has a silver lining. Jenifer Klepesky lost her daughter Madison and Madison’s boyfriend and JonPaul Gonzalez when their vehicle was hit by a habitual speeder in 2021. Out of that experience, Klepesky formed the non-profit Madison’s Miracles Incorporated. The charity was created to help parents and families copy with the sudden loss of a child, something Jenifer and her husband were not prepared for. Madison’s Miracle’s Incorporated provides victims with compassionate assistance, financial support, personalized service planning and expert referrals.  Klepesky explained that challenges she faced and how she has turned that experience into a way to help others. Along with providing specifics on how families can access help, she also had details on their upcoming fundraising event.

The leading cause of death among children up to 4 years of age in the United States is drowning. And, according to the CDC, South Carolina ranks 9th in our nation in drowning deaths. Again this summer, the Summerville Family YMCA will host their “Splash Into Safety” program. The YMCA’s Marketing Director, Justin Ramel, providing the background for the purpose of the program, and broke down this summer’s schedule. The YMCA takes a mobile pool to rural areas, St. Stephen and Walterboro this year, and provides swimming lessons for just $1 dollar a lesson. The Splash into Safety program focuses on life-saving skills for children and also engages parents in learning important skills to help keep their children safe. In addition to the specifics on this program, Ramel also share details on other programs the YMCA is offering families this summer.

Myers talked about the biggest misconception that people have about individuals with Down’s Syndrome and how they are assisted. She also spoke about what the goal is for GiGi’s Playhouse and how a father or mother could begin working with the playhouse. The organization has their first Charleston fundraise in July and Myers share the details on their “I Have a Voice” Gala.

All children should have the opportunity to participate in youth sports. That’s the idea behind the Never Stop Foundation, formed earlier this year by Gary Botkin, who shared his motivation for starting this non-profit. Too many families cannot afford the expense of participating in youth athletics, so the Never Stop Foundation fills that need. Botkin explained how the Never Stop Foundation helps children in need and how a mother or father could have their child receive assistance. Botkin described some situations where the Foundation was able to make a difference and talked about the needs of the organization and how both business and individuals can provide support. He also laid out his plan for the future of the Never Stop Foundation and the organization’s ultimate goal in our community.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra League is the fundraising arm of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. This summer, the CSOL is introducing a new event, “Arts Serenade” on Saturday, Aug. 16. Sophia Perlee, a CSOL Board member describes as an afternoon of live performances with interactive experiences celebrating the Lowcountry Arts Community. Taking place at North Charleston’s Park Circle, Arts Serenade will feature not only live music performances, but live art performances as artists will create works at the event. Plus, there’ll be interactive sessions where visitors can speak with the artists and performers. Arts Serenade is to both introduce attendees to portions of the arts they otherwise may not experience, and to fundraise for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra.

According to its website, the S-C Youth ChalleNGe Academy is in Eastover and is a place where change happens. The academy is for youths that have had some challenges and need assistance to get back on the right path. Ronnie Scott, the Academy’s Executive Director explained the Academy is not a military academy, but it does have established systems that cadets must adhere to. It is also not a place where troubled youth are automatically sent. The Academy accepts cadets in two cycles, one in January and one in July for the six-month long program. Teenage residents of South Carolina can attend the Academy for free. Plus, there is an opportunity, and need, for adults to join the program and become mentors to the cadets, which is the way Scott was introduced to the Academy.

The 55th annual James Island Yacht Club King Mackerel and Inshore Fishing Tournament is set for Saturday, July 26th. This year’s tournament is a benefit for Pickle’s People. RJ McHugh, the tournament director, shared the details of this year’s event as well as how local fisherman could enter to win cash prizes, and assist this year’s charity. Each year the tournament raises money for a designated charity, with this year’s recipient Pickle’s People. Zach Volousky is a Yacht Club member, and the founder of Pickle’s People, a non-profit created following his daughter’s leukemia diagnosis. The charity assists families who have a child that is a patient at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Volousky explained the specific ways Pickle’s People provides assistance and the impact that money the tournament raises will have.

Kristoff broke down the various terms surrounding the storms, providing the difference between a Tropical Depression, Storm and the 5 levels of a Hurricane. He also shared the difference between what a watch is what a warning is. In addition, the meteorologist gave some specific things that Lowcountry residents should be doing now to make certain they are prepared when a major storm is approaching. Kristoff also let us in on what happens behind the scenes as a storm approaches, and their strategy to keep viewers in the know.

There’s a new animal rescue nonprofit in Mount Pleasant. MeowDog is the new organization, which is a partnership with Lucy Beckham High School. Alex Mccarrell is the founder/director of MeowDog and a teacher at Beckham High. She has been able to coordinate the non-profit work with the veterinary program at the high school and incorporate the students into roles at MeowDog. Mccarrell shared how a student came up with the name, and how the school has worked with MeowDog to become a drop off location for donations. She gave insight into the animals they been able to help and the importance of fostering. Reynolds Lee, the President of Beckman Vets club joined the conversation to share how MeowDog has been a positive for both him personally and the school as a whole.

Each summer, South Carolina’s Premiere, and largest, flower show is held at Exchange Park in Ladson. This year, “Smiling Faces, Beautiful Places” is the theme of the Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston’s event on August 2nd and 3rd. Trish Bender is a Council of Garden Club member and explained that the organization is a non-profit that helps to beautify the Lowcountry through a number of programs. It has 19 local chapters and has worked with the Exchange Club on this show for the better part of 50 years. Bender provided specific details on the two days the show is open to the public, as well as describing the competition part of the show, which occurs two days prior to the public portion of the show.

Approximately 10 years ago, then radio personality, now City of North Charleston Ombudsman Edwin Wright was asked to assist in dealing with a truancy problem.  He created the “Cool to be in School” program which continues today.  Saturday, August 9th, with the assistance of the North Charleston Police Department, the annual “Cool to be in School” Supply Drive will take place.  The event will provide not only school supplies, but haircuts and other necessary back-to-school elements for those in need. Associate Chief of Police Angela Johnson and Captain Terika Wright spoke of the department’s role in the drive and provided specifics on the event.  The pair also shared information on CAPS, the department’s athletic program for youths in need in North Charleston.

Only a small number of those who are eligible to donate an organ actually sign-up to do so in South Carolina. We Are Sharing Hope SC is a non-profit organization educating area residents on the importance of being an organ donor. Krystal Cau, Director of Communications for We Are Sharing Hope SC provided some background on organ donation and went through the steps as to how someone could become a donor. Cau also spoke on how the non-profit works with the community, and one of the ways is hosting an health fair. Their 4th annual free event is set for Saturday, Aug.9. The director shared the services they would be providing, along with the other free activities available as part of the event.

Ten years ago, Katrina Carpenter lost her mother Jean. Out of that tragedy, she was inspired, in her mother’s honor, to create Jean’s Angels. Originally the nonprofit was created to assist children who lose a parent or parents. As the nonprofit grew, it expanded the services they offered. Carpenter shared how she felt after losing her mom and how that emptiness was turned into helping others in the same situation. As Jean’s Angels celebrates a decade of service to the Lowcountry, their biggest area of growth has been in assisting the homeless. Carpenter is most excited by their newest addition, a trailer that brings portable showers to the homeless community. She also shared how people could help Jean’s Angels, not only monetarily but through item donation and volunteering.

When their son Bohdi was just 3 years old, he was diagnosed with cancer. At that time, Jen and Josh McConnell did research and discovered the best place to have their child treated was in their hometown, at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. After he was cured, the couple created the McConnell Foundation, a non-profit designed specifically to fund pediatric cancer research at the hospital. This year, their biggest fundraising event is the 4th annual Shining Star Gala on Saturday, September 20th. Jen and Josh shared how and why they created this event and what attendees can expect if they attend the Gala at Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms. They also discussed the importance of the research being done locally and why funding the research is so critical.

More than two decades following the tragic events on September 11th, the moment in history might be fading in the memories of some. To help make certain the memories of the heroes of that day and those that were lost, the 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride was created. Gary Goldman is the founder of the ride, and the event director, who is originally from New York and lost a good friend when the towers fell. He created this free event and involved local police and fire departments so the ride would be police escorted as it moves through the Lowcountry. In addition to the ride, the event begins with a pre-ride breakfast and ends with an after-ride party that features speeches from local political leaders and a New York City fireman.

The first Saturday in November, hundreds of riders jump on their bicycles and ride to help win the fight against cancer. The event is Lowvelo, a benefit ride for the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Chris Winn is the Director of Lowvelo who explained how the name of the event was created, and what the overall point of the event is. Lowvelo is not just one ride, but a series of four rides, each a different distance, including an 80-mile course. Riders collect pledges with 100% of the rider money going directly to fund cancer research at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center. Winn spoke of the work being funded at the cancer center thanks to the event, which has a $1 million dollar goal this year.

Since 1987, Carolina Children’s Charity has been assisting Lowcountry children and their families. Beale explained how the Charity helps children with birth defects and childhood disease and the steps a Lowcountry family needs to take to receive assistance. Additionally, she shared stories of the more than 4,000 children they have helped, and talked about way, beyond donating money, how individuals can assist Carolina Children’s Charity. The organization has a long relationship with area fire departments and Beale discussed how that came about and its importance today. Plus, she provided the details on their next fundraiser, the 22nd annual Care, Give, Run on Sept. 27, a family friendly 5K event.

For the 14th year, the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce will host its annual “Mount Pleasant Business and Community Expo on Thursday, Sept. 18 at the Omar Shrine Center at Patriot’s Point. Rebecca Imholtz is the organization’s Executive Director and explained why the Chamber was motivated to hold the Expo and how the event has grown over the last decade. She shared the purpose of the expo, discussed how this event assisted both the town, businesses in the local area and residents, while sharing the new elements of this year’s event, including their first ever job expo. Along with a list of sponsors of the Expo, Imholtz provided a timeline for the event and spoke about how the event, and the Chamber as well, is not just an organization for business, but is also a huge positive for residents of Mount Pleasant as well.

Treasurer Loftis talked about the challenges created when a family incurs debt and how the Future Scholar program works to alleviate that issue when it comes to education. The Treasurer explained how someone could open a Future Scholar account, how there is no minimum to start it, and the tax advantages that come with the account. Future Scholar can be used for more than just college expenses and Treasurer Loftis shared the other ways funds can be spent educationally.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Each October, a group of local men are recruited to be a part of the American Cancer Society’s “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign. Captain Chris Cooper of the Summerville Police Department is part of this year’s campaign and is fundraising for the cancer society. The officer has created the Real Men Wear Pink Music Festival to happen on Saturday, Oct. 25 in the Nexton section of Summerville with three bands performing. The ticket money will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Cooper shared why he agreed to participate in Real Men Wear Pink and how he came up with the idea for the music festival. The Captain spoke of his strong community relationship through the police department and how the department is supporting his efforts to help win the fight against breast cancer.

The largest fundraiser of the year for the Salvation Army is their “Kettle Campaign” that takes place every year for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday seasons. And while people think of the Salvation Army helping during the holidays, they serve the community all year long. Captain Joshua Davis explained some of the many programs they offer, including Emergency Financial Services and Disaster Relief. The captain provided information on this year’s Angel Tree Program that provides children of financially challenged families Christmas presents so kids won’t have to go without during the holidays. Along with sharing information on how families can register for and how volunteers can assist with to assist the program, Captain Davis also gave details on helping with the Kettle Campaign and how they collect donations, even cashless donations.

This year’s fair opens on Thursday, Oct. 30 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 9, featuring 11 days and nights of rides, games, food and live entertainment. Jay Wallace is the PR Chairman for the Exchange Club of Charleston who explained what the Exchange Club is and does, and how individuals can join. Wallace shared the amount of money the fair generated for local non-profits in 2024 and how organizations can apply to receive funds. Plus, he ran down the entertainment and spoke about the new elements that families could look forward to at the 2025 fair.

SEGMENT #2: BarBrewGrass
GUEST: Suzanne Auld, President and CEO
ISSUE: Children’s Health and Human Services
Very few people actually know and understand what it is like for a family when a child has an illness that will keep them hospitalized for an extended period. Suzanne Auld’s son was diagnosed with leukemia and became a long-term patient at the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Out of that ordeal, Auld created BarBrewGrass, an event and then non-profit organization that now provides assistance to families with a child at the hospital. BarBrewGrass began as a bluegrass festival but has grown into and all-day food and live music festival, this year to be held at Firefly Distillery. Auld shared the history of the event and what people can expect this year. She also explained where the funds raised go and how they specifically assist those families at the Children’s Hospital.

SEGMENT #1: East Cooper Community Outreach

Established following Hurricane Hugo, the East Cooper Community Outreach has been assisting residents east of the Cooper River since 1989. Over the past 18 months, the organization has undergone a renovation at their facility off Six Mile Road in Mount Pleasant. The rebuild broke ground in April of 2024 and was completed in August of 2025. Stephanie Kelly is the Executive Director of East Cooper Community Outreach and explained the need for the renovations and what it means for the organization and the clients they serve. Kelly spoke of the challenges they are facing because of rising prices and how that limits what they can provide and affects the amount of donations coming into ECCO. With the holidays close, Kelly spoke of the needs they have and how East Cooper Community Outreach works 24/7/365 to assist those in need.

SEGMENT #2: Friends of the Hunley

This summer market the 25th anniversary of the H.L. Hunley being raised from the floor of the Charleston Harbor after having been discovered following its only mission in 1864. The Hunley was moved to the Charleston Naval Yard in North Charleston where it has continued to be restored. The Friends of the Hunley is a nonprofit established to help protect and preserve the H.L. Hunley. Kellen Bulter is the organization’s President and Executive Director who talked about the importance of the Hunley today, more than 150 years after the end of the Civil War. She explained how people could visit the Hunley today and how the sub is a tourist attraction. Butler also shared information on the nonprofit’s largest fundraising event, their 20th annual Oyster Roast on Friday, Oct. 25.

SEGMENT #1: Salvation Army

The largest fundraiser of the year for the Salvation Army is their “Kettle Campaign” that takes place every year for the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday seasons. And while people think of the Salvation Army helping during the holidays, they serve the community all year long. Captain Joshua Davis explained some of the many programs they offer, including Emergency Financial Services and Disaster Relief. The captain provided information on this year’s Angel Tree Program that provides children of financially challenged families Christmas presents so kids won’t have to go without during the holidays. Along with sharing information on how families can register for and how volunteers can assist with to assist the program, Captain Davis also gave details on helping with the Kettle Campaign and how they collect donations, even cashless donations.
