Milan-based producer Fred Simon brings you two delicious slices of modern funk in collaboration with two of the most heralded vocalists in the scene. MoFunk Records artist Moniquea lends her voice to "Don't Go Under" while Amalia, known for her releases on Tokyo Dawn & Cherries Records, gets down on "Island Of Magic." In hearing both tracks, you can discern the formula - Clever chord progressions with a jazzy flair that come across as something of a nod to neosoul, combined with the rhythm of 1980's boogie funk, thus interpreted with analog synths and drum machines in place of a live band. You can hear the remarkable range that the style carries; on "Don't Go Under," the pace is on the urgent side, with Moniquea switching effortlessly between singing and rapping, advising you to push forward no matter what. "Island Of Magic" takes the same sound, puts a citrus-colored cocktail into your hand and sets you down on a palm-lined beach at sunset. Amalia takes the emotion of love and presents it as a physical location. In much the same way, we are bringing these two amazing tracks to physical form with a limited 7", on bone-colored vinyl, only 150 pieces pressed!

Liquid Liquid - Scraper (CBS Instrumental Edit)

No one has lived a life quite like Marcos Valle. He became an overnight international sensation, fled a military dictatorship, dodged the Vietnam war draft, had his music sung by Homer Simpson, made enemies with Marlon Brando, and became an unsuspecting fitness guru for multiple generations. But to truly understand the great Brazilian composer, arranger, singer and multi instrumentalist, one must listen to his music.

Between the release of his first album in 1962 and today, Marcos Valle has released twenty-two studio albums traversing definitive bossa nova, classic samba, iconic disco pop, psychedelic rock, nineties dance and orchestral music. He has also had his songs recorded by some of the all time greats, including Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Sergio Mendes, Elis Regina, and (last but not least), Emma Button of the Spice Girls. He has also had his music sampled by Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pusha T and many more. With his twenty-third studio album Túnel Acustico, Valle set out to bring it all together.

“I believe my music is many things. It goes in different directions. I have many different ways of writing music, sometimes it’s melodies and harmony, sometimes the groove is the focus. But all the music I have made over my sixty year career is unified. It is all natural and it is all sincere. And this is what I wanted to bring to my new album.”

A prominent feature of Valle’s career has been his dual residence between Brazil and the USA. Originally moving over in the mid-sixties on the back of bossa nova’s international proliferation, Valle toured with Sergio Mendes and became hugely in demand as a composer and arranger. But the Vietnam War loomed and the threat of being drafted saw him return to Brazil. He spent the following years in Rio writing music for TV and film, as well as four cult favourite albums in collaboration with some of Brazil’s most groundbreaking musicians including Milton Nascimento, Azymuth, Som Imaginario and O Terco.

By 1975, Brazil's military dictatorship was at its most oppressive, making living and working increasingly difficult. Valle moved back to the US where he would reside in LA, writing songs for, and collaborating with the likes of Eumir Deodato, Airto Moreira, Chicago, Sarah Vaughn and Leon Ware, amongst others.

Túnel Acústico features two songs originally conceived during Valle’s time on the West Coast: “Feels So Good”, a stirring two-step soul triumph written in 1979 with soul icon Leon Ware, and the sublime AOR disco track “Life Is What It Is”, composed around the same time, with percussionist Laudir De Oliveira from the group Chicago.

On Túnel Acústico, Valle's core band features two members of the renowned Brazilian jazz-funk group Azymuth: Alex Malheiros on bass and Renato Massa on drums. The rhythm section is completed by percussionist Ian Moreira, with additional contributions from guitarist Paulinho Guitarra and trumpeter Jesse Sadoc.

The contemporarily composed music on Túnel Acústico features an impressive lineup of guest lyricists, including renowned Brazilian artists: Joyce Moreno, Céu, and Moreno Veloso, as well as Valle's brother Paulo Sergio Valle.

The album closes with "Thank You Burt (For Bacharach)", a tribute to the legendary composer who passed away in 2023.

Tried to keep it fairly simple this time around and keep everything as a more straight forward funk edit - but with mostly just louder drums. Mostly I was just hoping to breath some new life into some fairly obscure funky tracks that I stumbled upon. It's hard to find original tracks to edit these days that haven't already been done before (let's be honest does SC really need another edit of 'Love Rollercoaster'!?)

I tried my best to dig deep and get off the grid ... but it's more than likely I'm not the first dude to climb Everest with these tracks. I'm feeling good about myself at this point so please don't share any links to the same songs that were already remixed / edited 7 years ago!

Charlie Brown Superstar (Brett Fuller) is a DJ, producer, remixer, and artist from Huntington, WV. A veteran of the West Virginia DJ scene, playing at such clubs as Gumby’s, Gyrationz, and the V Club since the mid 90s, Fuller is known for playing a wide range of music with a focus on Nu Disco and house, and is also known in the Nu Disco/Disco Edit scene as a producer. He has released music with labels across the world, including Candy Beach Records in Spain, Thunder Jam Records in Israel, and Sound Exhibitions Records and Boutade Musique, both out of Italy, as well as American labels, Bent Ant and Fresh Farm Records. Fuller’s songs have charted on all three major DJ music sites: Traxsource, Beatport, and Juno Download. His track “Never Gonna Stop” with Alpaca Edits (England) spent weeks at #2 on Traxsource Lounge/Chill Out chart. Several of his songs have also been included on the Traxsource “Essential List.” In addition to his solo work, in the early 2000s, Fuller also released 2 full-length records and toured with the band Hyatari, and was also a touring member of the 90s band Chum. 

Currently, Fuller concentrates on what he calls Mountain Funk, an eclectic blend of jam, funk, and electronic, with elements of local flavor, that he has showcased at festivals such as Mountain Music Fest, Brew Skies, and Kickin’ It On the Creek, and, more locally, Huntington Music and Arts Fest and Funktafest. Fuller has played clubs across the Midwest, including in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, and is part of the Rust Belt Alliance, which features DJs based in Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Huntington.
