Friction returns to Shogun Audio, the iconic drum & bass label he started 20 years ago, with a stunning reworking of Monrroe & Emily Makis’ classic ‘Never Too Old’.  

Since launching Shogun Audio in 2004 with a remix of jungle anthem ‘R Type’, Friction has welcomed some of D&B’s finest to the label over the past two decades, including the likes of Alix Perez, DJ Marky, Pola & Bryson, Icicle, Technimatic and DRS among many others.  

 The imprint has also acted as proving ground for some of the scene’s best up-and-coming talent, and no two have stood out like Monrroe & Emily Makis.  After both debuting on Shogun in 2019, they have established themselves as rising stars within UK dance music in the years that followed.   Their track ‘Never Too Old’ from the ’15 Years of Shogun Audio LP’ has cemented itself as a fan favourite across the globe, and it’s now fitting that Friction delivers a new anthemic version to commemorate the label’s 20th year.

The celebrations continue for the rest of 2024, with ’20 Years of Shogun’ club nights, festival takeovers and a lot more exciting records celebrating the past & future of one of D&B’s most beloved institutions.

With luscious, enveloping strings and elegantly restrained piano chords setting the tone in the intro, Charlotte Haining's instantly-recognisable voice takes the lead. It's a defining characteristic of Hybrid Minds' work that they give ultimate respect to their collaborating singers, and, here, it's the power of the vocal that drives the tune onwards.

The fact that these producers can balance the emotional dynamics of Charlotte's performance with the sheer dancefloor energy of weighty low end and rolling drums is a piece of studio alchemy few have mastered.
