French producer Para One can't seem to stay still. He invented a whole new kind of rap with French hip hop phenomenon TTC, then dreamed up Epiphanie, an insanely complex solo effort which originated the French sound that stormed the world in the last couple of years. Next came the quietly beautiful surprise of Naissance Des Pieuvres, soundtrack to the acclaimed movie Water Lilies.

So it came to pass that, while on a U.S. tour with top allies Surkin, Orgasmic and Curses!, Para One couldn't stop thinking about the classic house, freestyle and electrofunk he heard on the radio--and, crucially, their direct connection to the post-punk pop his older sisters loved when he was a kid. Back in Paris and deeply inspired, he worked fast and furiously, roughing out tracks with synthesizers, drum machines and an army of percussion. As the ideas took shape, he sensed one day they'd be pop songs.

Around this time, a close friend turned Para One on to East Coast house singer San Serac, who made underground waves with his album Professional and his band Stereo Image. He asked Serac to write lyrics for one song, what the fuck right? Well. Two years, seven flights and countless espressos later, the pair had an album. They set a charter of leftfield pop you can dance to and wound up finding unexpected common loves along the way: early Ice Cube, late Japan, Chas Jankel, Drexciya, 52nd Street. Throw it in there was the rule of thumb.

The name "Slice & Soda"--a pizza-related code for the project whose significance only the duo truly understands--stuck. And when the last Prophet V note is played, what we have is a record of many styles tied together by San Serac's voice, oscillating between Byrne and Bowie, more nimble than ever in its shouty falsetto, funk cadences, cryptic poetry and impassionned slogans.

Gasoline Fire's manic disco funk and Year of the Dragon's nimble, addictive bassline are the first sounds to filter out the S&S compound and it's enough to make you feel young again.

SLICE & SODA - Year Of The Dragon

A swingy 909 house track with 3 movements.  The intro slowly rolls out based around some Rhodes chords and a 101 melody.  The middle builds pads upon more and more melodies.  The final section features the 303 plodding its' way to the end.  Some vocal melodies and spitting OB-8 arpeggios hold everything together.

The dutch label Audio Culture released this as a one-sided, etched 12" vinyl and digital on August 20th, 2012.  You can order the vinyl here or most good record shops...

A debut release for both band and label, Parisian duo Paradis' bring two eloquently produced tracks to Beats In Space in the form of the Parfait Tirage b/w La Ballade de Jim 12" (BIS001). Admirers from afar of DJ Tim Sweeney's weekly on air institution of 12 years (from which the label takes its name), Paradis submitted demos hoping they might hack it for some play time. 

Reared on classical and jazz, turned young hip hop rebels, turned teen club crawlers, and then university machine tinkerers, Simon Mï¿½ny & Pierre Rousseau grew out of genre jumping while young enough to stay ahead and settle into music making centered around melody and emotion. 

This touchstone approach is perfectly apparent on "Parfait Tirage", a track built around sublime synth ambiance, a compelling sequence lead, and what will one day be unmistakably recognized as the Paradis vocal sound. The b-side, "La Ballade of Jim", is a deep techno take on beloved French artist Alain Souchon's track from the 80s, and already a staple in Sweeney's live set. 

Each 12" from Beats in Space features original artwork in considerate & serial form. The first 12" features artwork by Bjorn Copeland, a 21st century schizoid collagist and member of NYC experimental music legends Black Dice. The 12" packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a vinyl BIS logo cling. The 12" will be available on September 20th, 2011 from fine retailers worldwide. The digital version will be available October 4th, 2011 from the drab internet universe.

After releasing a first single "<a href="http://soundcloud.com/shinydiscoclub/tempogeist-satisfy-me">Satisfy Me</a>" on Shiny Disco Club, <a href="http://soundcloud.com/tempogeist">Tempogeist</a> now present their very first EP "Transatlantic.
Through this EP, Tempogeist show their talent for songwriting and composition by taking you into a disco-pop journey between the two great continents.

“2.4.1” is the second track to be unveiled from “Sans Dormir”, the second Bot’Ox LP. Two months after “Basement Love”, this second episode of a six-piece series reminds the two guys of the sound of California. No doubt it is less dark than the previous one. However, it does not really qualify as sunshine pop. The single is presented with four remixes from Paris, Tel Aviv, Toronto and Medellin.

1. 2.4.1 The artificially low voice of a man who has not been lucky in love matters tells us how money leads to trouble. Sami Osta, one of the band’s friends and partners, is the one who says this text written by Anna Jean, already responsible for some vocals on the previous LP, most notably on Blue Steel single. The production, driven by drums and guitar textures, is balanced between its complexity and the laid-back impression that the song leaves.

2. 2.4.1 (Cosmo Vitelli remix) Just as he did for Basement Love, Cosmo Vitelli, one half of Bot’Ox, gives us his dancefloor style take on the track. But the result is far from a simple “club edit”. He explores new and rich melodic, instrumental and rhythm paths. The eight-minute track is divided into several distinct sections.

3. 2.4.1 (Red Axes remix) Red Axes, the Israeli duo who signed two EPs and several memorable edits with I’m a Cliché, worked to change “2.4.1” into a discoish post-punk ballade.

4. 2.4.1 (Sandro Perri remix) A member of the famous label Constellation since 2003, the Canadian producer stays close to the original while deepening its soft-rock features. Less vocals, more guitar solo.

5. 2.4.1 (Sano ‘Money remix’) Young Colombian producer from the Cómeme family changes “2.4.1” into an acid track. And one comes to consider what kind of a drug mix can result into this weird alliance between a weighty voice and jerky moves.
