The man whom I'm named after, Adolfo Ernesto Samudio Avila, nicknamed Fito, studied in London and went on to become the Chief of Detectives in Panama around the middle of the last century.  He was my grandfather's older brother, out of several older than the two.  He married Verna Levy, a beautiful, blonde, blue eyed Jamaican young woman of British descent.  Verna had an older sister, Esme Veronique, of whom I only recently learned about, during a recent trip to the family mausoleum.

This piece is an imagining of their doings-about as a trio during their young times in and about Kingston, Jamaica, Panama City, Panama, and London, England, during the late nineteen twenties.

in the maze of doubts.
Il nulla is subjectively unacceptable.

But what’s almost real quotes the third landscape.
It entices us to browse through the wreckage
of visibility. Leftovers from passages that no one
had the rashness to venture.
Whereas the straw, bland and ditched, avails
scarecrows and stuffed chairs.
These deeds of the might-be
stare out of people’s eyes and gnaw at us.

All of me wanted all of it. 
All of me surrendered.'

Роман «Чапаев и Пустота» сам автор характеризует так: «Это первое произведение в мировой литературе, действие которого происходит в абсолютной пустоте».

На самом деле оно происходит в 1919 году в дивизии Чапаева, в которой главный герой, поэт-декадент Петр Пустота, служит комиссаром, а также в наши дни, а также, как и всегда у Пелевина, в виртуальном пространстве, где с главным героем встречаются Кавабата, Шварценеггер, «просто Мария»...

По мнению критиков, «Чапаев и Пустота» является «первым серьезным дзэн-буддистским романом в русской литературе».


Принимая разные формы, появляясь, исчезая и меняя лица,
И пиля решетку уже лет, наверное, около семиста,
Из семнадцатой образцовой психиатрической больницы
Убегает сумасшедший по фамилии Пустота.
Времени для побега нет, и он про это знает.
Больше того, бежать некуда, и в это «некуда» нет пути.
Но все это пустяки по сравнению с тем, что того, кто убегает,
Нигде и никак не представляется возможным найти.
Можно сказать, что есть процесс пиления решетки,
А можно сказать, что никакого пиления решетки нет.
Поэтому сумасшедший Пустота носит на руке лиловые четки
И никогда не делает вида, что знает хоть один ответ.
Потому что в мире, который имеет свойство деваться непонятно куда,
Лучше ни в чем не клясться, а одновременно
говорить «Нет, нет» и «Да, да».
