Marshan is a husband/wife duo that performs improvised based ambient loops. With the help of many kaossilators and unique live instrumentation that includes theremin, saw, oud, microKORG and a slew of world percussion instruments, Marshall and Shannon create atmospheric sounds that are a perfect accompaniment for reading, sleeping or that space where you just want to slow down, relax and let your mind wander.

The story of Chicago Afrobeat Project begins a short 15 years ago. In 2002, a group of musicians sharing a common interest in West African rhythms met to jam in a West side artist loft on Chicago’s Lake Street. Quickly they realized that mixing afrobeat with Chicago house, indie rock, hiphop, or jazz opened new avenues for experimentation. Something clicked. The group had found a collective calling.

Fast-forward 15 years, hundreds of tour dates, and four studio releases, and the group has found ways of interpreting afrobeat through American urban sounds. Through it all, CAbP has been at the center of the emergence of the North American afrobeat scene. In its newest release, What Goes Up (September 29, 2017) the band features special guest and legendary innovative drummer Tony Allen, as well as many Chicago vocalists and MCs.

Allen, once exclaimed by Brian Eno as “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived,” plays kit on all 10 tracks, recording his signature beats behind the band and vocalists. This collaboration makes Chicago Afrobeat Project the first American band to produce a full-length studio record with Tony Allen.

Taking the vocal helm on the album are Akenya (Noname, Chance the Rapper), JC Brooks, Kiara Lanier, Legit (Chance the Rapper), Ugochi, Oranmiyan and Rico Sisney/Maggie Vagle (Sidewalk Chalk). The band’s new vocal-laden approach makes the songs of What Goes Up concise and intentional, and markedly different from CAbP’s prior recordings.

A staple of the American live music scene for years, the band’s live show now combines its historically instrumental style with the new vocal approach. Crowds feed off the spontaneity of the soloists and enthusiasm of the band.

Chicago Afrobeat Project has been a 100% independent artist since day one, with its new release What Goes Up following suit.

Each nation in the world holds its own unique musical tradition, polished and refined by thousands and thousands of years. Entire universities are into studying this legacy our forefathers gave us. The science and the technologies develop progressively, but when it comes to the finest strings of our souls, we do not look forward but gaze inside ourselves, a place where the integral part of our essence is, our roots. Now, just as before, they carry their genetic code. Just as the music itself: even before it became classics, jazz or techno, it has always been a very special instrument, a separate language for the human soul. Our page is dedicated to the merging and intertwining of the traditional cultures of the world and the modern electronic and dance scene. We are interested in drawing wide attention to the modern ethnical music and making it popular. We are constantly at search of new names, musicians and corresponding events. "I live in the music - the youngest resident of the famous Buddha-Bar, Artem Gafarov, admits. - My relationships with people, my trips, my most important deeds - all of this is subject to a certain rhythm, and I always remain faithful to it".
His music is easy to recognize - it is mystical and meditative, but at the same time it carries sincere drive and genuine emotion. He is really fine-tuned to feel the audience, at the same time refusing to cave in to the ever-changing tastes. In his repertoire there are lo-fi, lounge, and techno rhythms, and his musical tastes were nurtured by the best Buddha-Bar DJs.
He participated in the creating compilations for the Kyiv Buddha-Bar and Buddha-Bar of St.-Petersburg, as well as for Kiev-based "Marrakesh" restaurant. Artyom considers DJ Kirill Doomski and DJ Rustam Babaev his teachers and is proud of working together on the same stage with DJ Ravin and DJ Claude Challe.
His music combines oriental temperament and European elegance, deep vibrations and atmosphere of magic. Standing behind the rack, he creates a unique world, causing time to flow in a very special rhythm that complies with him only. Gafarov is open to the world, for he knows no boundaries: he draws inspiration from the Buddhist chants and Indian motifs, from western electronics and Ukrainian ethno.
With his oriental temperament, always surrounded by an aura of mystery, he is used  to giving his emotions to people around him, doing it with his talent. Positive, harmonious, open-minded - this is the way his fellow DJs describe Artyom. All the same certainly applies to the music he plays.
