Dedicated to my late grandfather, who passed away after a quick but relentless battle with Parkinsons. A quote from his favourite piece, Beethoven's 7th Symphony, can be heard in the opening and closing sections of this movement.

Naipí, a Guaraní Chief’s daughter, and Tarobá, a young warrior, meet and fall in love. M’boi, a serpent deity living in the river, sees them together, and in a fit of jealousy, demands that Naipí be sacrificed to him instead. The Chief agrees.
Rather than enduring a life apart, Naipí and Tarobá meet one last time and decide to flee together in a canoe.
M’boi, enraged by this betrayal, chases them along the river, finally slamming into the earth, creating the immense Iguazú falls.
As punishment, Naipí is turned into a tree on one side of the falls, and Tarobá is turned into a rock on the other, so that they may see each other for eternity but never be together.
