The Philharmonia Orchestra, founded in 1945, is a world-class symphony orchestra for the 21st century.
 
Led by its Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia has a pioneering approach to the role of the modern-day symphony orchestra, reaching new audiences and participants through audience development, digital technology and learning and participation programmes.
 
The Philharmonia has been resident at Southbank Centre since 1995 and presents a Season of over 50 performances each year. Orchestral programming is complemented by series including Philharmonia at the Movies, Music of Today, the Philharmonia Chamber Players and an Insights Talks programme.

Magdalene is a vocal artist with a diverse voice. Her love for experimenting with music has led her down interesting musical avenues, including an opera career (specialising in character and comic roles), jazz collaborations, theatre and film work, as well as electronic music production. After receiving her Honours in Music with distinction at the College of Music at the University of Cape Town, she was accepted into the prestigious Cape Town Opera Studio. She then became part of the popular all woman group Sterling EQ, entertaining international as well as local audiences. Magdalene, recent Fleur du Cap and Kyk-Net Fiesta nominee, now freelances across South Africa, appearing as soloist in various productions, corporates and concerts. She will make her debut as the female lead Christine Daeé in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s world famous musical Phantom of the Opera in November 2011, starting on familiar ground at the Artscape Opera House, Cape Town and ending at the Teatro at Montecasino, Johannesburg.

Liesl Stoltz studied at the University of Stellenbosch after which she studied in France and Italy where she obtained diplomas with distinction. She numbers among her teachers Éva Tamássy, Shigenori Kudo, Pierre-Yves Artaud and Peter-Lukas Graf and has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions in Romania and Germany.
She has appeared as soloist with the Cape Town, Eastern Cape and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestras, the Free State Symphony and with the UCT String Ensemble, Camerata Tinta Barocca and Odeion Simfonia. In June 2010 she obtained the degree D.Mus from UCT. She continued with post-doctoral studies at the same institution and did several recordings and performances featuring South African flute music. In 2017 her CD “Explorations - South African Flute music” was proclaimed the winner in the category “Best Musical Composition” in the annual Humanities and Social Sciences Awards of the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences. At present she performs extensively as soloist and chamber musician and teaches at the South African College of Music, University of Cape Town. She plays a 14k Yamaha flute and was named a Yamaha South Africa Artist in 2018.
