※1 セハードは低木と草からなる乾燥地帯で、ここでは「奴隷の苦しみ」を意味する。黒人の乳母とは、ブラジル人にとって悲劇的な奴隷の映像を象徴させる言葉。（自分の夫が主人にムチで打たれている時も主人の子供の世話をしなければならず、自分の子供がお腹を空かせて泣いていても、主人の子供に乳を飲ませなければならなかったなど）黒人の乳母の像がサンパウロ旧市街にある。

※2 奴隷としてブラジルに連れて来られたコンゴの王様に、本来の王の踊りを踊らせ儀式の中に登場させようという意味で、「奴隷を助け出せ」という意味をあらわしている。

※3 大広間（Saloes）は白人社会の象徴で、裾を引きずるレースのドレスはバイーアの民族衣装。「黒い肌のバイーアの女性が堂々とどっしりと町や通りを闊歩する姿」をあらわしている。
